If they end up with a name they keep it, but I don't sit down and try to name them like cats.

Only when my fingers are refusing to cooperate and then it is highly subjective as well as a temporary, occasionally derogatory reference....

Can only be in the heat of the moment and temporary...
After all guitars do have feelings and may refuse to stay in tune just out of spite...

I've had my Guild for 45 years and never named it, but as soon as I got my strat, it told me it was Maisie. I didn't argue. To the best of my memory, I'd had no spirits or other recreational intake.

Over the years I have but with the bunch I have now only a couple have names. One piece of advice..don't use wives or girlfriends names!

Should probably call my guitar "damn" since that seems to be the word I say around it the most

My '62 Musicmaster arrived with the name "Josie" hand-written in pencil on the underside of the pickguard. Problem solved.

Hmm...

...to this mind, the first "inanimate" objects named were bodies of water and mountains.

...then maybe, cities, towns, geographical features, ships and works of art? And structures; cathedrals, mansions, bridges, streets and roads and documents?

King Arthur's sword, Excalibur, Roland's horn, Oliphant, David Crockett's rifle, Old Betsy.

Then came "Trains, planes and automobiles"...and spacecraft?

And corporations.

According to "Stradivari's Genius," by Toby Faber, all the surviving Stradivari instruments have names.

And so do most of this picker's instruments.

Why not?
