2011 is the 25th year Widespread Panic have been recording music and touring. They are also one the highest grossing bands in the world. Radio doesn't play WSP and they sure don't film "pretending to play" video clips for the television audience.

Psychedelic trippy hippies are everywhere and have made those musicians multi-millionaires a long time ago. It doesn't suck to be in Widespread Panic.

With some friends playing a Tom Waits tune.

WSP and groups like Phish and other "jam bands" are kind of the offspring of groups like the Grateful Dead and the Allman Bros.....you didn't hear much of those guys on the radio either except for a few of the more radio friendly songs they had....their real deal element was when they were live and flying by the seat of their pants...few did it better.
I've seen Dave Schools,I think his name is,several times with Warren Haynes and Govt. Mule after Allen Woody died...he was a great bass player.
I met and talked with Haynes and Woody at seperate times before they were in the Allman Bros. and way before the Mule, and their influences were the same as mine...those '60s bands like the Dead, the Brothers,Clapton, and Mountain and Cream...that's where the music comes from now....and has stayed alive, thanks to the newer bands, and I'm glad.
My youngest son loves and plays that stuff live, and he was born in '85...jammin' will stay alive no matter who doesn't like it.

+1 jamming will live on after all the record companies are dead! 8)

You don't need drugs to play.

I haven't ever smoked a cigarette, much less a joint. I used to drink, but I gave that up, too. My playing and songwriting improved greatly.

If you want/need to "open your mind", go out in the country and watch the sun rise. Stay there all day and watch the sunset. Look at the stars that night. If you live in the city you forget about how beautiful the night sky can be. It's a great high, legal and no hangover.

Go volunteer to help an elderly person with household tasks--and sit and listen to them talk about their experiences. That will open your mind to times and places that you'll never be able to see. Then listen to a child talk about their dreams and hopes. That will take you to new places you haven't seen before, either.

Take the person(s) you love to a park, sit under a tree and just breathe. Count how many different types of flowers are there. Feed the squirrels. Watch the ants. You'll realize God gave this stuff to us for our enjoyment...and you'll feel as small as "Alice" ever was.

If you need to take your music to a dark place, that's fine. Concentrate on the injustices of the world, the pain and suffering all around you and then let the feelings flow into your music. Cry if you have to. Scientists have analyzed tears of sorrow and tears of happiness. Sad tears clear bad chemicals from the human body. Tears of happiness come from the release of good endorphines, and are akin to a good, relaxing high. Either way, you'll feel "clearer" than any pill, leaf or liquid can make you.

Grab your guitar and go crazy. Moan, scream, holler and yell--you'll get a release like you'll never feel from drug or drink. Let the wah pedal cry for you, let the distortion grind your bad feelings down and let the fuzz warm you. Turn on the rotary, close your eyes and let it spin you around like a whirling dervish. Get lost in the reverb. Set the tremolo on your amp to the rate of your heartbeat and pulse your way through to a higher plane.

But you don't need drugs to play music, and anyone who does is lacking in spirit.

Yeah, sadly drugs are what killed Allen Woody and hundreds of great musicians...when I heard he had been found dead,I was hoping that wasn't what it was,but have heard since it was an OD.
He was a good guy and great musician and it was a huge loss to the world of music.

I always loved Psychedelic Rock with groups like the Blues Magoos,13th Floor Elevator, The Electric Prunes,The Seeds,The Mojo Men,The Hombres etc. Rhinodisc has a great 4 CD compilation set called Nuggets -Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968 and it has all these artists and many more It's a must have for psychedelic music fans.I got mine from http://www.cduniverse.com / for about $50 but it was well worth it. Just take 3 hits of Orange Barrel or Purple Microdot, sit back and blow your mind lol.

Don't forget the great 13th Floor Elevators or the Moving Sidewalks...or American Blues.

All great Texas bands who played psychedelic music much earlier than anybody...

Actually it was his second or third band, but it was his first "real" band that recorded and played bigger gigs. If you can find the Moving Sidewalks "Flash" CD on the Akarma label, do it...it's got the full album and several of their singles on it, too. It will blow your mind, even without the peyote...especially the song, "You Don't Know The Life I'm Living"

Yes, they played on the same bill as Hendrix a few times, and supposedly when asked who the "best new guitarist" was, Hendrix said, "There's a guy down in Texas named Billy Gibbons..." Hendrix also gave Billy a pink Stratocaster that is still in BFG's possession.

...the American Blues (I mentioned them in that post too) had Frank Beard and Dusty Hill as the rhythm section. I own one of their albums on CD (Akarma label again), but it didn't move me the same way "Flash" did. "Flash" had flashes of weird in the genius, but "American Blues Is Here" was the opposite (flashes of genius in the weird).

Well said.

Personally, I like psychadelic music. I just don't do drugs, nor do I want to. If there's a revival of the music, that would be awesome. But I've seen what drugs do to people and I hope that doesn't get any more widespread than it already is.

'Said it before; 'studied chemistry back when "recreational chemicals" were big; it scared the everything out of that then-kid. 'Knew people who died, went blind, lost parts of themselves to that ***t. No thanks.

That said, wise souls have said it here, watch the ocean, the sunset, the veins on a leaf. Think about every detail of what makes a sound come out of the you-your guitar cosmic nano-universe.

Hold your loved one, pet your dog, pick your guitar and be thankful to be able to do so.

In this opinion, "the world" is "too big" for a psychedelic or any other revival. Too much diversity and rapid flow of information...

...and perhaps most tragic of all, too short of attention spans.

Love and peace and harmony with the infinite multiverses, Sisters and Bros.
