I remember the 70's and the 80's.

I can't answer your question. I remember the 60s, 70s, and 80s, coming from a place where magic mushrooms, poppies, and where some consider the finest grass grows, and where boatloads of other junk arrives from overseas (factoid: the discount store with new and old products will always be available). I worked in an industry that thrived on every mind blowing drug available, so I am no stranger. Unlike some, I had terrible physical shakes, weeks of vomiting, and high temperatures when I kicked the two pack a day nicotine habit cold turkey because of my lung condition (Yes, I enjoyed and miss my habit - so I get it). Still, after all that, and serious related drug experience, I am neither judge nor jury, and we have some agreement about drug pusher association, etc. I do, however, enjoy smoke free areas, clothes, hair, and cars (especially when I want to own one). It's really is okay with me if one doesn't share that choice, as long as it doesn't affect me. I also prefer better lungs, although not as good as they could have been.

As for good, better, best with legalization . . . opinion is one thing, politics and industry another, we'll have to wait and see IMHO.

Meanwhile, back to psychedelic music. :D

I remember the 70's and the 80's. The first time I tried acid I was just going to pick up some bud and the guy said "Hey, I got some of this - want to try it?". Same with coke. If picking up some bud was just a matter of going to the store and buying it, like alcohol, I wouldn't have been in the same room as the guy offering the other stuff. Maybe I would have eventually tried other stuff at a party or something but if the general attitude is that weed is acceptable and legally obtainable, maybe people would go to the liqueur store to buy alcohol. the pot store to buy pot, and leave everything else alone. I know alot of people that smoke daily but gave everything else up decades ago.

Just noticed that this was post number 420 for me - seems kinda appropriate.

I thought of this thread because negative creep wasn't a total douche all of the time just most of the time just kidding NC  .
After reading again, somebody got in way over their head.
Didn't happen often.

Back in 68, we (in my band) for a brief while thought we were far more creative when high. One day, we decided to tape a rehearsal; to prove the point, we'd play a couple songs straight, then get high. We were sure that the creativity would flow in the latter version. Very, very wrong. The high versions were sloppy, not creative at all ... nothing a paying audience deserved for their money. And so that was it: no drugs or alcohol before or during a performance or rehearsal. Must have worked -- we went on to do pretty well for the next 6 years, and we just played -- no stage theatrics (except the singer), no laser light shows, no custom clothes, etc.

On a more personal note, I lost friends to drugs and even some who didn't die now lead ruined lives. And I include our two favorite legal drugs -- tobacco and alcohol in that. I'm not preaching -- although I quit "drugs" entirely after maybe 2 years, I went on to smoke for another 18 and even now drink wine and beer from time to time. Am I more witty after a glass or two of wine? Maybe I should tape myself and find out!

The part of the era we should keep (and we owe a debt to the Beat generation for kicking this off) is the part about having an open mind. As I was brought up (50s, early 60s) one had an unquestioning stance toward authority, religion and everyone's fixed role in life. We need to promote the open mind aspect, especially today when it seems more and more are becoming unquestioning robots operated by the Internet, corporate owned news outlets and so on.

To steal from the OP -- drugs aren't going to help you keep an open and questioning mind either. If anything, they'll keep you complacent and content with the status quo. Not for me, no thanks!

This one takes me way back, lol...

But to supplement the previous post, I've seen/heard myself play drunk and I've seen/heard myself play sober...sober was better every time.

It did make it more difficult to deal with certain band members, however...usually the ones who wouldn't admit they had a substance abuse problem.

I have no doubt that certain creative juices were perhaps "enhanced" initially, but the drop off was quick, painful and devastating.

I wonder if ol' Negative Creep is still smoking...then again, after reviewing this thread, I guess I really don't care.

Thanks, spacewolf. That timely post was really great. Really enjoyed that, and now I'm tuned in and turned on by Tales of Murder and Dust . . . even being sober and drug free. :D

Glad you liked it, FSB. If you eschew the mainstream, you can find a lot of good music out there these days. The Europeans seem to be having a great neo-psych scene going. And I certainly agree, no drugs or alcohol are required for enjoying good music.

There is a lot of new Psychedelic music out these days. I listen to Tame Impala (though I hear the third CD will have even less guitar tha the last one; not good), Toy, Wooden Shjips, Temples, The Black Angels, The Black Hollies, Darker My Love, Crystal Stilts, GOASTT, Pond, and many more. Even the latest Black Keys CD, Turn Blue, has some Psych in it.

My pleasure, Rollie. Turning people on to good music is still fun.

I have listened to a little Tame Impala and the Black Angels, both are pretty good. I am definitely going to check out some of these other bands.

I have also posted a lot of hard psych in the YT thread - Khemni, Samsara Blues Experiment, The :Egocentrics, Electric Moon, etc. I love these styles of music, and I'm glad they are resurgent.
