screw that line6 digital crap.
yeah they are ok amps. i have one myself, but
geez, everything sounds to dang digital. i like the vox line of modeling amps.
higher quality tones in my opinion and less digital sounding.
screw those jetcit........wait, tim is on this post isnt he............lol
ok i cant knock jetcity. they are designed well, great tone at a seriously fair price.
(just pullin tims leg above) jetcity and egnator are two of the newer, better companies out there. great products at very fair prices.
have i mentioned the MESABOOGIE EXPRESS 5/50 yet by the way?

Well, you COULD build your own!

Need an old mono power amp, and two or 3 tube preamps to create distortion, the first to control the amp, the others stacked so that they can be pushed into clipping (distortion). And you'll need an instrument speaker, plus all the adapters from RCA plugs to 1/4".

I can also vouch for the Vox modelling amps as waycool jr. suggested.I have an AD120 VTH and it has several delicious hi-gain amp models that are very realistic replicas of the real thing from Marshall JCM 800s,900s and 2000s to Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers and even 100W Soldanos and Dumble Overdrive Specials. You can pick up used AD and VT series Vox amps on the cheap these days so they're also worth a look-see.

oh man you HAD to throw that in there didnt you?
you already made me by one egnator amp already.
dont do it again, not now anyways that im in line
for a MesaBoogie Express 5/50, which would be
a killer amp for the op's buddy to try out.
im in love with the 5/50. MSRP is fine with me for
this lovely amp. its my goal this yr and a marshall
as well. i already have more guitars than i know
what to do with. i need to catch up on my amp
collection. there are 2 or 3 vintage amps im keeping
an eye out for too. get it while its here type of thing.
however, that amp you just mentioned is amazing.
only egnator could come up with that offering for sure.

The Egnater Armageddon has a built in ISP Decimator Noise Reduction System. I don't do the Metal thing but it looks like a pretty cool amp.

I wouldn't mind having one of these myself. I'd personally rather go with one of these over a Dual Rec. The tube function layout is different than a DR, but works basically in the same way. I'd be able to turn one into a beast with that layout.

Not that are any good. Not enough mids, far too much bass. Fizzy sounding.

Now that's interesting, because I recently saw a metal band and the guitarist was using a medium-sized Orange amp, and it sounded great. I don't know what model it was, though...however, they were more like "classic metal", 70s/early 80s style stuff that could probably be classified as "heavy classic rock." Somewhat like Sabbath, AC/DC and early Motorhead combined.

I like the Orange amps for heavier blues/rock and alt/punk type of stuff.

hey sorry guys i couldnt reply until now. anyway his budget is about $300, so i know mesa is out. and he's not in a band at the moment. he'll mainly be using the amp for practice/jam sessions, and eventually performing. someone at a local guitar shop recommeneded the ibanez vypyr. any thoughts on that amp?

Do you mean the Peavey Vypyr? I don't know of an Ibanez amp by that name.

What kind of metal is he playing?

The earlier questions still stand (including the one about the girlfriend).

yeah its probably the peavey. and im not sure what type of metal he'll be playing, he likes a lot of different metal bands, so it would help if the amp was versatile. and he would probably like around 70 watts or so.

and about his girlfriend, i'll have to give you a "no comment".
