Why do you collect guitars?

I'm asking you this question because I always find myself looking at guitars, planning to buy a new one. In itself it's not a big problem, but I already have a really really good guitar who satisfies me all the way.

Where this need comes from? Does somebody here got the same feelings? Have you ever ask yourself these questions??

I collect guitars to get the oppourtunity to play a guitar I normally wouldn't play. Sometimes I'll just buy a guitar because I believe I'll make some good money on it in a year or two. Sometimes I'll buy a guitar because someone doesn't know what they have and are selling it way too cheap.

every time i go to guitar center or somewhere i always get the urge to buy a new guitar even though i have three perfectly good guitars which cover pretty much all genres, but i still want to increase my collection even though.... not sure why, i just enjoy guitars a lot

edit: CS is right, sometimes i'm tempted to buy some cheaper limited edition guitars in hope they may be worth something someday... who knows

I'm too low on cash to get me another one, I'm tempted to get one at monthly payments once and a while.
They come up with good deals over here, like whenever a store is bankrupt or feel like they need a clearance sale they'll actually give you a 0 percent interest rate...
I just can't get a job seeing as I'm still studying and all :(

but otherwise I think that would be my third hobby aside from playing the guitar :D

I buy a guitar because it will (hopefully) give me the sound that I'm looking for, and be useful and versatile enough to keep. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. I do try to make sure that I don't lose much money on the deal if that happens. It certainly isn't about making a profit. And life is too short to buy a guitar just so I can sell it.

I wouldn't call myself a collector--per se, more a guitarist that has a few.
But the ones I've bought have been because they're different than what I have. (With the possible exception of my Les Paul and Les Paul copy. But the real one is so much better--and it was such a good deal. But I other than that all my guitars have something significantly different. As will my next planned purchase-a resonator.

(Of course if I win a guitar or get one as a gift--it can be a duplicate-or not.)

Also, when you never sell a guitar, but continue buying one every year or two, pretty soon, before you know it, a guy can end up with quite a collection over 30+ years.

You want the real answer?

Psychologically, collecting things is a hedge against death: there is a natural brain response associated with the hunt that convinces us that we won't die as long as we are in pursuit of something ("I can't die now, I just started redoing the kitchen"). Also, spending money feels good, because it helps ward off feelings of hopelessness or depression. Furthermore, especially in America, we are inculturated to imagine that "he who dies with the most toys wins," so we may collect things to bolster our personal sense of worth.

Some people come to attach their identity so completely to their collection or to a specific fetish object that they get anxious or angry when anyone fails to pay the object the proper respect.

But hey, don't take my word for it! (or, as Marti DeBergi would say, "Enough of my yakkin'!") There's plenty published on the subject. Lots of theories, of course, but this is the one that resonates with me.

oh, it all makes sense. And gravity Jim, I share your view on the subjet in a certain way. I always felt like, by buying a new guitar, I'm not just buying an objet, but virtualiy acquiring something else. I don't know what, and thats what keeps me from buying a new one now. I have to find the answer before going any further.

Thanks everyone for your posts

I can't explain it. I bought 2 guitars last year, and I told my wife that I wan't to get a Tele soon. She looked at me like I'm crazy. It's just an addiction that I can't seem to explain.

I collect guitars because, it's the one thing that I am serious about. I have a lot of guitars because I can find a unique use for everyone, or they have some sort of sentimental value to me. Also it's just fun getting a new guitar.

I don't think that I started out with the intention of collecting guitars. But I am a collector/hoarder of all sorts of things, not a "throw away" person, so I guess it was inevitable.

For me, I had initial collecting goals, like collecting each major type of guitar: Tele, Strat, LP, SG etc... and then I really got into collecting the many many variations of Telecasters. Along the way, I wave ended up also with variations of Strats, LPs, SGs and other unusual guitars that were just of interest.

Nowadays, it's getting hard to find variations on Telecasters, so I also buy additional guitars to sell later, if the price is unusually low.

I would point out that I don't have any pre-70 "expensive" collectable guitars - I have a bit of a negative attitude towards paying 5 digits for a guitar. maybe I will if the "right" one comes along, but at this stage I have resisted the urge.

The bottom line? I love the look of the guitars, I love playing them (although it is extremely hard to play them all regularly now) and they are probably a very solid investment, when compared to the recent stock market gyrations. I also love showing them to other people. I don't think this is a "I have more toys" thing (although it could be of course  ) but rather they also get enjoyment out of seeing all those Teles in the same place and appreciate the variations in the various models.

So heres about 1/2 of the Telecaster collection...
