49 years ago today in 1962 the fifth Beatle Stu Sutcliffe died of a severe brain hemmorhage,he had taken a sabbatical from the Beatles to make a life with his German girlfriend Astrid. The others were devastated from the loss, although Stu was no great musician he was a dear friend to them all.

Also on this date in 1970 the official news that the Beatles had disbanded was released. I remember the profound sense of loss I had that day,it hit me as hard as the death of a loved one.I dare say I was one of millions that felt that way as the news stations couldn't get enough Beatles footage to put on.I'm here now listening to Breakfast With The Beatles and will no doubt be playing their music all day long.I'll even try to pick up the guitar and play some Beatles songs-that is if I can without being overcome with emotion.

I picked up a few John Lennon solo LPs today. Odd coincidence.

That sounds good, but I have no source of income right now. The £5 I bought the records with was the last of my pocket money for the month.

The 5th Beatle to me was and always will be George Martin.
Hard to think of their music without him.

Stu was a good friend, but I think he lacked the talent of the others, and he knew it - - however Astrid, was extremely creative IMO. Still sad news and thanks for jogging the memories!

April 10, 1970.

I remember floating in the amionic fluid, wishing there was a bit more room in the womb and kicking my mother's pancreas because I was crowded...then the news about the Beatles breaking up came in through the umbilical cord and I realized I didn't have it so bad.

Eight days later I made my vocal debut, singing a medley of Howlin' Wolf songs after the doctor slapped my butt. The Screamin' Armadillo was born...

Speaking of Stu reminded me of the move "Backbeat".

Excellent quasi-bio pic on the Beatles circa the Cavern Club era, with a heavy bent on the story of Stu & Astrid.

The soundtrack was killer. I just picked it up a couple months ago at a second hand store for a couple bucks. Check out the personnel on this:

Greg Dulli (Afgahn Whigs) - vox
Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) - vox
Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) - drums
Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) - guitar
Don Fleming (Gumball) - guitar
Mike Mills (R.E.M.) - bass

These guys did early Beatles staples like "Money", Twist & Shout", "Rock & Roll Music", and "Please Mr. Postman"

I don't know if the cd is still in print (for those of us "fossils" who still get cds), but it's definitly worth checking out...

cheers,

john.

Stu Sutcliffe was IMO actually was the 5th Beatle. He played bass and McCartney played guitar. It's interesting because a lot of people have different opinions on the subject. Even Billy Preston was considered a 5th Beatle. Some people consider Brian Epstein and George Martin the 5th Beatle even Eric Clapton. LOL

Stu couldn't play bass which is why McCartney who played guitar, switched to bass.
Stu had a little more money to buy equipment which is why he was welcome to John, Paul and George and Pete.

Billy Preston was a friend of theirs from the Hamburg days. Never a 5th Beatle.

Brian Epstein was their Manger. And not very good at that either according to John and Paul when they saw how little money they actually received from all of the endorsements that Brian negotiated away when the Beatles started to make it big in the early 60's. Including Publishing rights. For a while Michael Jackson owned the entire Beatles publishing rights until he was losing money on bad investments and exorbitant lifestyle...he then had to sell most of them to Sony, to bail his butt out a couple of years before he died.

McCartney and Ono had tried to buy them prior to Jackson, who bought them for approximately $50M USD. The worth these days is approximately $1.5 Billion USD.
The individual Beatles own Songwriters rights but the money is in the Publishing.

I never said I agree on the 5th Beatle. Stu was the ONLY 5th Beatle IMO. I find it amusing how many people are on the list. It's like the Six Degrees of the Beatles. As far back as I can remember, Please forgive my geezer mind if I'm wrong, Preston was signed to Apple Records around 1969. Preston played on the "Get Back Sessions" and Lennon thought at the time he could be a "Fifth Beatle" McCartney axed the idea saying it was hard enough with four.

Preston did meet the Beatles when he was 15 in Hamburg while touring with Little Richard and Ray Charles in 1962. The Beatles were pretty much unknown at that point but on the rise.

Check this out.
