nice work shredd

Thanks man. What I'll do is post the finished version right underneath it when the EP is released. For the next week, I'll analyze it, makes some tweaks here and there, and go into the studio with a final result. It will sound different on the recording.

Writing solos for a song is my favorite part of being in a band. It can be frustrating at times, but when all is said and done, I can't wait to write another one. I find it very satisfying and rewarding.

believe it or not, some people just dont like soloing shredd. they just like working on interesting chord changes and chord voicings. those guys that are like that are usually pretty good at it.

I agree with you 100%. That's how I ended up in this band. Our other guitar player really doesn't like doing them. And he does kick my butt in rhythm playing. There are things he does that I couldn't touch. We work together to compliment each other. I always admire the things Ryan does as a rhythm player. At the same time, when we feel a solo is needed in a song, the guys are happy to be able to hand the task in my direction and I'll get on it.

It certainly is a personal thing in my case. I just like the whole process. Growing up, lead guitar players were my heroes. They were always my favorites to watch, and I'm sure that influences my enjoyment with it.

Indeed...and it gives me a bit of food for thought as far as some of my soloing techniques.

I'm just free-associating here - a little mental noodling - but I'll share a thought that's occurred to me while pondering this thread about "soloing".

When considering what's made the playing of all my heroes (Hendrix, SRV, EVH, Trower, etc) really move me, I've come to a realization that there are some distinct common denominators among them that have made them all stand out. They were all players whose so-called "rhythm" playing was, for me at least, way more interesting than their "soloing". The rhythm playing stood on it's own, by way of interesting harmonic content, and the line between "rhythm" and solo all but dissapeared.

The biggest commonality was that they were all going it alone...One guitar and a rhythm section, which I guess forces to innovate ways to fill the spaces in an interesting way.

But the biggest factor, as I've said before, was they were all unafraid to add harmonic color to that tired old I-V-IV power-chord cliche.

Can you imagine what a dud "Purple Haze" would have been without the dominant 7th add 9th (the "Hendrix chord")? Or how boring "Panama" would have been if Ed hadn't had the balls to go ahead and blow those full major chords (dissonant 3rd and all) through that plexi?

ed might not have been using the plexi's any more by then. the plexi's started giving out in the early 80's.
for a short period of time he used soldano's. after that i think he jumped onto the 5150 bandwagon. who knows. ed has told more lies over the yrs about his gear than one can count.

Hendrix was drawing from his years as a R&B sideman, that was really natural for him and then add some acid and wham..."Purple Haze".
I read one time where he had a dream where was underwater or in some strange setting and met a beautiful woman, she waved a sort of "purple magic dust" around and that's where he got the idea.
Duane Allman wrote his beautiful acoustic tune "Little Martha" after having a dream where he and Jimi Hendrix were sitting in a motel room talking and Jimi said "listen to this" and started tapping out the tune on a water faucet....Duane woke up and came up with the song.

Plexi, Soldano, whatever. It could have been a Behringer, for all I know (or care)...jeez, talk about missing the point.

the point was about the MUSIC.

Remember:

Those who can, play

Those who can't, become gear nerds.

I was told I'm a helluva blues player...I took it as a comment  and I like vintage amps and gear...so I guess I'm a helluva blues/guitarist/amp/gear nerd...or just a helluva mess.

In the recording I posted earlier I used a $100 Ibanez Gio and a $65 Biyang Metal End straight into the board.
