Huh???...

Isn't "soloing over the chord changes" just another way of saying "soloing over the progression"?

the chord changes are the "progression".

its a screw up.

A) do you solo over the progression
or
B) do you solo over the chords

Actually, I think the OP's question is:

A) solo over the chords/changes/progression (all the exact same thing)...or

B) solo the melody

The answer is a good solo does both. Since a well-written melody follows and reinforces the progression, sticking closely to the melody is a sure-thing (but can get boring). Embellishing the melody with phrases that deepen (or bend) the harmonic "color" of the applicable chord livens things up...see "NOTES, BLUE"

Further, we all have an obligation to discourage the "I don't need to know theory" rationalizations of the musically-lazy.

My bad...

Did I answer your question?

The "I don't need to learn theory" comment was not aimed at you, BTW.

"Blue notes", flattened 3rds, 5ths and 7ths, are what turn a major scale into a "blues" scale.

a good solo does both? yes.
there is no right or wrong to this question, im just asking what it is that folks do on here personally.
you can play over the progression as a whole, you can change positions as the chords change (playing over the chord), or you can do both in a solo.

no problem, i was just taking an opportunity to throw insulting punches at the OP.

im trying to learn theory now. ive off and on tried it over the last yr. well im kicking myself to do it this yr and as a common practice for me.
i think it would be easier if i could communicate where ive been, what im doing, and where im going to other musicians and actually understand it.
that "if it sounds good it is good" theory doesnt cut it any more for me personally.
( its just my opinion and comment towards my own personal needs folks  )

Thanks man. What I'll do is post the finished version right underneath it when the EP is released. For the next week, I'll analyze it, makes some tweaks here and there, and go into the studio with a final result. It will sound different on the recording.

Writing solos for a song is my favorite part of being in a band. It can be frustrating at times, but when all is said and done, I can't wait to write another one. I find it very satisfying and rewarding.

believe it or not, some people just dont like soloing shredd. they just like working on interesting chord changes and chord voicings. those guys that are like that are usually pretty good at it.
