I gave up a long time ago trying to sound like someone else. I buy gear that sounds good to me. I play in a style that makes me happy. For years I tried to be David Gilmour. I guess when your starting out it's good to have someone to emulate, to have sonic goals to reach to help you grow. Eventually though, you have to become your own guitar player.

Completely agree. I have come to the realization that I will never sound like some of the people I have tried to emulate. I buy my gear to what feels right to me.

I think when most people get into music it's because of someone like Hendrix or SRV (anyone who turned them onto playing in general) and since they like that artists sound so much they figure, 'Hey why not go for that.' But eventually somewhere along the way we all realize we need to be our own person and go in our own personal direction and that's when you really start to advance. Don't bag on people because they like a sound and want to chase after it, just wait until they realize they need to be their own person and then push them in the right direction.

Tone and style really is largely "in your hands:" note choice, timing, pick attack and attitude are much more important in "nailing" a sound that what guitar or amp you use. Word to your mother

I totally agree, Jim. Most of the time, the hardest part of playing a song, is 'nailing' the technique.

Absolutely, Nitro. BTW, I've got a Rogue ukulele, too. It totally paid for itself the first time I used it: fingerpicking it really hard to reproduce the characteristic "clunky" music-wheel tone of a jack-in-the-box. :D

Yup, I enjoy playing mine too. I don't really know a whole lot of uke songs, but it's still fun to experiment with.
I'm thinking about getting one of the baritone ones some time.

Vintage versus Modern sounds?

Well, since most guitars aren't very much different from what they were using in the '50s and '60s, the difference between Vintage and Modern sounds must come from the amps. Sure enough, today's amps feature much great stages of gain. You didn't see Gain on the vintage amps!

So once again, a BIG part of the SOUND is due to the amp you use. No surprise there, I guess.

It's funny how at some point in time we all want to try to sound like someone else, then we just go for our own sound. That is the beauty of music, YOU make it sound like YOU want to. I try to stay away from effects pedals and try to get my main sound from stock guitars and amps. Man, you can get some crazy sounds from a 65 Twin R/I and Tele. 8) Let us all rock on!!!

Kust be lucky that you don't live in an era where you had to pay to hear music and it was always live and to make it even worse you would never be able to afford a musical instrument.

I don't care about labels, I just play and if its good, its good, whether its vintage or modern or whatever adjective you want to call it.

i've been playing for 7 months now and am still trying to nail my own sound. i can feel it peek out every once and a while when i'm writing then it decides it doesn't like me and goes back to hiding. until just recently i was gettin frustrated with this and i didn't like anything i wrote but i'm relaxing a little and lettin whatever comes come.

it's harder than you'd think to be a perfectionist - you drive youself and everyone around you nuts. when you are one it's supposed to pay off eventually, but i'm still waiting for that to happen!
