As to the socket, give it a go and remember, we all love pictures!

Hey wow - it hurts!

Maybe that was just once, though. Let me try it again and see.

Whatever: it sure is a quick way to arrive on the far side of the room. There's that to be said for it. 8)

How could frets change the tone?

My guess is that it would be something like how slides made out of different materials have different tones. Even the thickness of a slide makes a difference. When you play with a slide you aren't touching the frets so they cease to have any baring on the tone produced, it's just the slide and your fingers. So I would assume that switching fret materials would be like switching slides.

Well, now you've found two.

Make that three. Tools are very expensive and work is not easy.

Today my tech brought his Les Paul with stainless steel frets to work for me to try out. He's had the guitar refretted with stainless steel for about three years now and there's no sign of wear. Of course, he did say it wasn't his #1 so it probably doesn't get played very heavily.

They felt really nice, especially bending. You could actually feel that there was less drag, the string just glides over them. The strings on the guitar were several months old and they didn't look like the frets were hurting them. I typically change strings every two weeks to a month depending on how much I play the guitar anyway. So string damage isn't too much of an issue for me.

For a Les Paul with humbuckers, it did sound brighter than I remember most being. Part of that might have been that I was playing through a Blues Junior at the shop, but part of that is also very likely the frets. I turned down the reverb and set the EQ flat to try and hear the cleanest possible sound from it. It has an odd clicking sort of noise when you fret a string, but that mostly goes away when you adjust the EQ and reverb back to normal.

I also asked my tech about leveling/refretting in the future. He said I probably wouldn't have to worry about a level for five-ten years and when I did that it wouldn't be that big of a deal for him to level it for me. He does stainless steel levels and refrets all the time and he has a lot of experience doing fretwork. If I got a neck with regular frets in it I'd probably be back in the same boat I'm in now needing a refret in about five years or so. And for the price, I might as well buy another neck. I don't really want to be in this situation again that soon if I can help it, so I'm kind of leaning towards the stainless steel frets again. It would be nice to just not have to worry about constant fret levels and impending refrets. If it's way too bright, I could always swap the pickups for the Texas Specials which are in my Squier and if I still can't stand it I could probably sell it at the store and still have enough money left to order another neck with normal frets. I don't know, it's still something I'm going to have to think about.

yeah you should have ran it through another amp. the blues jr tends to be a little bright for a paul. thats how i got mine. the guy was a paul player and wanted to sell for a renegade by egnator. i wonder if a EQ pedal would straighten out those highs/brights?

I actually liked the extra brightness on the Paul, I wouldn't want to get rid of it if that were my guitar. It's the Strat that I'm more apprehensive about. EQ pedal idea is interesting, it might give you more control over the tone than just your amp's EQ would.

martian is a dumbass. stainless steel frets are god's gift to man and i will never get another guitar w/ out them again. they not only sound far superior but also make you a better player, with considerable less exertion placed on your tendons as well. they also make two WHOLE step bends possible if you want to get ambitious. (that's a major third!)

SS frets definitely make your sound, sound much better, look at eric johnson's tone. if they sound thin, tinny or brittle. then you need new pickups and i strongly recommend john suhr's Michael landau pick ups for your $@!&#* fender strats.

Anyone with a plek machine can work stainless steel frets w/ ease, which most likely won't be at least until ten years down the road. Also anyone with a fender guitar should immediately sell it and buy a suhr or anderson guitar because they are the greatest guitars being made right now. I wish someone would have told me this information ten years ago.

Even though I think I have decided to go with stainless frets, I don't think Martian's a dumbass at all. He's an established member of this forum and we all value his opinion here.

And I think I'm going to hang on to my $@!&#* Strats, thank you very much.
