I have a little less than two weeks to record a song to send to several different places for scholarship applications. I have everything I need for recording guitar, bass and vocals. I don't have drum mics but I have a drum loop which sounds fairly decent. My only major problem is keyboards. I have an entry level keyboard but it doesn't really sound good enough to use for recording. But Logic has some great sounding software instruments, and my keyboard does have a MIDI out.

So I need a MIDI interface and I need it quickly. It's really very simple, it only has to have one input. I also don't want to spend a fortune on one. Since my Dad works at Apple he gets a discount on M-Audio products so I was thinking of going with this. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT1x1.html Or this one, since it looks sturdier. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT2x2AnniversaryEdition.html

MIDI is something which I'm brand new to, so if anyone has some recommendations I'd appreciate hearing them. Also, does anyone know of some good more compact and portable MIDI controllers? My keyboard is a bit of a pain to take around with me, and it's too big to leave set up in my room.

I have been using the earlier version of the second one you link to: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT2x2.html

The one you link to looks like the latest version of mine. I have been using this interface since I started using the original G-DEC 30s in January of 2008. It's a great interface which has never given me any trouble of any kind and it's not particularly spendy. I don't know about MIDI controllers since I've never used my interface with anything but the Fender amp. I've got a nice MIDI keyboard, but no time to mess with it in the last several years, like since January of 2008.

Hey Tex,

in your case I would get an M-Audio Keystation 49e (dunno if they still make them) or a similar USB keyboard, and plug it in using USB. That way you can use it as a Keyboard to trigger every sound Logic has.

Cheers

Nutter
