my band and i would really like to record some of our stuff to listen to it back, show it to people, post it online to show y'all, etc. anyway can someone tell me exactly HOW to go about effectively recording our songs?

as far as the equipment needed like mics, a mixer, etc. i think i found a good mixer online, the alesis multimix 8, but im not sure what we would need to go with it.

help would be much appreciated.

Well I still use reel to reel to record so I cant offer much help in digital age but it's always a good start getting a bunch of SM57s.

Well, many go lo-fi with the video camera positioned for the most optimal audio capture and post it on the you tube. If you need a demo type (good quality) recording, what is your money budget?

List of examples least expensive to more expensive:

1. You can get just a simple stereo portable recorder (or as mentioned digital video camera).
2. You can get a computer with multi-channel fire-wire interface + mikes and cables.
3. Or get a multi-channel recording console + mikes and cables.

Another option is to network with music peeps that has access to recording gear and pay few cases of beer.

DO NOT BUY THE ALESIS!!!
The cheap price definitely reflects the quality of that unit. I bought one a couple weeks ago and hastily returned it due to a horrible lag/latency issue. The sales person said that was normal and that a lot of people had been returning them (stupid GC knowingly selling me CRAP!) lately. What was suggested to me and what I plan on picking up is an interface. M-Audio makes a bunch of good ones. And while I have to pay a little more, I don't have to worry about latency on my playback, making recording a much nicer experience. So that'd be my suggestion. Running an interface into a computer with a mixing program should do you good. I use GoldWave ver. 5.58 as my mixer, and for a free download it works really great and is very simple when it comes to mixing tracks. The only downside, being the free version, every 150 clicks I have to close and re-open the program, and every 2000 I have to re-download it (which takes no longer than 30 - 45 seconds). I could buy it for $50 if I cared but it's such a non-issue to have to download the free one for every couple songs I record I figured I could just save my money.

Check it out, and if you really like it you can drop $50 bucks and get the released version.
My brother has CakeWalk Music Creator on his computer, and I greatly prefer GoldWave. You can find some pretty good tutorials on their site for using it as well as YouTube. Good luck. The #1 thing to keep in mind with recording, if you've never done any mixing, there will be a bit of a learning process, but once you got it, you've got it. If you go with GoldWave and have any issues, feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. Good luck, we all look forward to hearing your tunes!

I've done live recordings with a ZOOM H2 http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodid=1916, you can find them pretty cheap http://www.samash.com/p/Zoom_H2%20Handy%20Recorder%20%20Portable%20Digital%20Recorder_-49972864.

I use the free Audacity audio editor http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ for converting WAV to MP3.
