Great lead playing - and a great line-up of Strats! Thanks!

i liked roberts if his volume was up a bit more.
hes about the cleanest player there is right now.
as for jimmy, i dont think hes all that honestly. i
think the better parts of his career he was riding
on his brothers coattails and has for some time now.
the thing i looked at most is how BB didnt show the
respect enough to the others and play rhythm for them,
but all the other 3 did for eachother as well as him.

Thank you for posting! I agree, Jimmie was there to play with B.B., his solo was understated excellence, the only guitar player there trying not to out play the King. I would love to work with Jimmie in a band atmosphere.

BB doesn't play rhythm, not because of ego but because (in his words), "I don't play them chords too well..."

Jimmie has always fallen in a weird place as far as people's opinion of him. People who saw or heard SRV first think Jimmie's a side note; people who heard JLV first think that SRV is too over-the-top.
Personally, I am a bigger fan of JLV; it might have something to do with his ability at backing up a harp player (I'm a harpist as much as a guitarist) and the fact that he's possibly the best blues rhythm player to ever outta Texas.
Also, I think SRV appeals to shredders and metal players more...JLV plays stuff more akin to music from the Golden Triangle; stuff that you would have heard from the production of Don Robey or Huey Meiux's labels.
There would be no Stevie if it hadn't been for Jimmie, and there would be no Jimmie solo stuff if it hadn't been for Stevie's death. I think he would have gone back to the T-birds if SRV had lived.

i just think to many people give jimmy way to much credit, like hes ever done anything
on his own. hes a legend only because who his brother was. ok i'll give you that he can play a pretty good rhythm guitar, but his lead work sucks for somebody thats been playing as long as he has and in his situation. i dont know that i can agree that there wouldnt have been a stevie w/o jimmy. sure his brother inspired him in his playing but im sure no more than any other kid looking up to his big brother for anything.
jimmy really didnt get popular until after stevie died. thats when he got the press and then tried to carry on his brothers legacy, thats when jimmy hit the lime light.
the first 4 tbird albums flopped at that time. he won 4 grammy's but 3 of which his guitar partner was stevie, the last one was trditional blues album of the yr, but there wasnt anything really coming out at the time so compitition wasnt steep ya know. so in a time when texas blues started to get popular again, (because of stevie) folks started looking a bit harder at the folks in texas. thats when jimmy really started getting press, again because of who his brother was. jimmy profited off the death of stevie in a big way, not that that was his intention because im sure it wasnt and its a heavy price to pay as well.
if it werent for the great singing and harp playing by kim wilson its a wonder if muddy waters would have pushed the tbirds at all. i mean jimmy had played the texas bar scene since 63 w/o being really noticed up until that point even. im sure i'll catch major flack from all the jimmy fans but thats cool, i expect it. :D

jimmie was born in 1951 and did not receive a guitar until he was 13. it would have been impossible for him to have played in 63 since he had not taken up guitar then. he received a guitar at age 13 and began playing the dallas bar scene at age 15.

ignorance is bliss.

Well, I finally got to watch the video in its entirety...

Clapton--tasty and understated, as Slowhand is known to do.
Cray--smooth and sweet, love the position 2 or 4 tones he gets on his Strats.
Vaughan--respectful yet unique; he brought a totally different vibe, especially his intro to his solo. He seemed like he was coming in through a different door, and that was cool.
King--after all these years, I still love his tone...thick and warm with just a little bite; that coule be a good description for BB tone or my favorite BBQ. He didn't seem to just be going through the motions like he sometimes does.
Randolph--awesome...I wish he hadn't been so tentative and respectful and would have just torn into it like we know he can.

If that was Reese Wynans playing keys...dang he's gotten old (but so have I).
