at this point it can go either way. im very early in the planning at this point.
why do you ask?

Just for the reason that I want to build my strat and I kinda scraped the trem in the plans cuase like you I don,t really use it much and a trough body is alot quicker when it comes to string changes, etc.

fair answer.

i have dozens of floyds ya know, and other guitars with trems.
they say that a hardtail has better connection with the body
possibly allowing for better sustain. some will argue that point, but i want to see for myself. besides, ive never owned a hardtail strat. only my tele's dont have tremolos.
i think it might prove to be interesting.

im just feeling around at the better options for me.
my g.friend suggests that i run the numbers on the back of the neck, find out what the guitar was/had, and recreate the guitar that it was ment to be. im just thinking and allowing you guys in my head, the safer part anyways lol.

Lots of people say the sustain of a through body is better, I gotta agree with them.

ive never owned a hard tail martian, so im curious.
poeople that have them swear by them. ive never had the pleasure.
ive see niki's point on the knife edges wearing down. ive never thought of that before until months back he mentioned that. thinking back, i bet that was a cause of some of the problems ive had in the past when i just replaced whole tremolo systems.
it makes sense. i hardly use the tremolo any more though lol. im up in the air on a lot of this still as you see. but i guess we are all at this point somewhere in our builds huh?

If not properly adjusted, the knife edges of the two point haphazardly grind down, scoring the two mating bolts along the way and in extreme cases, distorting and elongating the stud holes. By the same token, the 6 screws can bend, distorting and elongating their respective holes in the plate and the guitar. Again, they both have their deficiencies.

I've owned a few hardtails in my time. To me, they are missing that extra dimension the tremolo (in reality, a vibrato) gives them; kind of like a pseudo-reverb or something. And no, I've never found them to acoustically sound, "Tele-ish" by any means. I've also found the hardtails to be a hair lower in volume when plugged in. Although I've never bothered to come up with some kind of "scientific" reason for this, I attribute it to the body not having the tremolo cutout and system itself. On the other hand, an advantage of the hardtail is when one bends or vibratos, less 'work' is required. This is because the bridge is fixed and cannot lift with the pulling tension of the string(s). As to which sustains better, vibrato vs. hardtail, this I found to be totally individual guitar specific with no clear winner.

If you go back to "Square One" with Strats, the purpose of the tremolo was for simply warbling a note or chord. Having said this, one thing common to both the 6 and 2 systems is the fact that neither unit was intended for nor is capable of, delivering the kind of service a Floyd can. Of course this is why Mr. Rose invented his device in the first place.

And yes, oftentimes, one will think and rethink a given build over and over again before the guitar becomes a reality.

martian

thank you for the indepth look.
i love learning through others wins and mistakes. it costs less in the long run by doing so and its always less painful.
so yeah im just thinking out loud here. i have for me what is the perfect neck for a
working mans guitar build. i dont want to waste it, but i dont expect perfect either.
very insightful on the hardtail martian. you will be happy to know that im leaning heavy towards fralin blues pups for this jewel. i can get them on the cheap and they sound amazing.

You're very welcome. In part, that's how I learned, lots of questions, lots of research. And don't sell yourself short as superior planning yields superior results.

I'm familiar with Lindy Fralin's products. They always were and continue to be outstanding. If you can get them cheap, they will make your build and final product all the more enjoyable.
