Yep, that's it. Here's a photo I took of my Supro Martinique. It actually has three pups. One is concealed in the bridge and can be blended with the neck pup. It's also made of Reso-Glass. I'm a photographer so okay, I git a little carried away with the shot. That's also my Twin that I sold about a year ago. I still have visitation rights.

Hamer was always interesting, expensive but excellent guitars and basses. I just read this and think Hamer will be missed by some guitarists:
"In December 2012, it was announced that Hamer would no longer produce guitars and would end the company". Hope these fellows are ok, Paul Hamer, Jol Dantzig and John Montgomery and Frank Untermyer, thanks for developing all of your great guitar designs and guitar related concepts. 8)

Wow. That is sad indeed, and does appear to be true judging by the inside word coming from Hamer dealers on the fansite:

http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topi ... -its-over/

It seems Jol Dantzig really was the heart and soul of that amazing company and it had no future without him. I wonder what the true behind-the-scenes story of his leaving was? I notice that all his fascinating and highly personal contributions to the Hamer workshop blog have been removed since I last looked at it, whether at his request or by current management, who knows?

http://hamerworkshop.wordpress.com/

That blog used to be such an excellent resource. It's still got some nice photos, but that's all. Airbrushed history - very soviet.

A sad way to end the year. Thanks for the news, SBLS: more of a heads-down than a heads-up, but...

Cheers - C

Ceri, wasn't looking for sad news but I did find it. Ever since I found out that FMIC bought Kaman music I have been apprehensive about Hamer. Could not understand why but now the closure of Hamer is why I was apprehensive. Hamer were the special guitars (think their 12 string bass guitar) that one might not need but that guitarists bought for themselves. Sort of like you have the Mercedes SUV for family and work but the Aston Martin is for yourself. R.I.P. Hamer, you will be missed.

Absolutely right, Rolly.

One of my favourite photos from Jol Dantzig's Hamer blog (which now seems to have been removed - because I just went looking for it to post it here and it's gone) was of builder Tom Maule working away with a chisel inside the control cavity of a Hamer to ensure that the finish was entirely perfect even in that seldom seen spot.

That's the kind of over the top attention to detail that made them such magnificent instruments. And I guess it's what makes companies like that a labour of love but probably not very profitable for a corporate owner.

Though I'm seeing some wild speculation about the corporate side of things on that Hamer fan forum - some of which might be true or may be completely wide of the mark. Ultimately, we just don't really know from the outside why the company is closing.

But it is a big shame.

Anyway. Happy New Year to you, Rolly.

Cheers - C

Thankyou Ceri! You nailed it with "Labor of love" those guitars were too labor intensive for that company to make anything more than minimum profit. Happy New Year to you too Bros, your celebration has started already. Have fun be safe! :D

I'm going to keep my Hamer Blitz Explorer bass. I hadn't checked this thread because it faded away over time. I've had the bass up for sale and have been getting good response- I think I know why now. When I started this thread I couldn't give it away. It's not a bad bass really. Maybe some new pickups but other than that it's good to go.

Hamer shutting down made me think of a friend of mine-----
A friend of mine builds electric and acoustic guitars and has done so for 25 years. He has some well know customers. He does not try to make a living building guitars but has orders for them constantly. He's making one for Mark Farner right now. He does not charge the 2 to 3 thousand dollar price that most builders do. It's a labor of love. He has fun building them. He told me the wood for a guitar only costs $50 on average and he wonders where the 2 to 3 thousand price comes from. Well we all know business is business and that takes the price of guitars to where it is now. I just thought it was interesting to think about. My friend was in a builders bio in Vintage Guitar and they are supposed to run another bio on him soon.
