Okay guys, I usually never do this and I do buy my music and software, but the complete Woodstock bootlegs are available for download. Do a Google search and you'll find it. Some of the performances were recorded better than others. You get to hear why some performances weren't used. They were horrible! It's fun to listen to the bootlegs, and you get to hear how much the studio doctored up a lot of the stuff on the album.

Oh there's also a museum there too. http://www.bethelwoodscenter.org/museum.aspx pretty cool stuff. I plan on going this summer. I have a place I stay in the summer not far from Bethel NY. If I go I'll be sure to report back.

Indeed!

Seems like just yesterday I was watching Neil Armstrong take his first step onto the moon during basic training on an Admiral B&W portable that our D.I.'s had set up in their canteen area next to the orderly room.

John Fogerty described the Dead's set as "two or three hours of tuning their guitars..."

I do think that Woodstock was probably amazing, in terms of the "vibe" and sea of humanity and great music and everything.

But I think there's probably a lot of parts that are now (purposely) ignored or forgotten by the general public. We all know Hendrix, CSN&Y (even though Y wasn't credited on the album), Johnny Winter (Tommy Shannon was the bassist!), Sly and the Family Stone, the Who and all the other great bands we know & love...but there were a lot of "who the &^%$ is that?" performers, too...

Bert Sommer
Melanie
Quill
Keef Hartley Band
...and a few others not immediately recognizable to a guy of my age (almost 41)...and I'm somewhat of a historian about music of that era.

This was, after all, a "pop" festival, so there were some disposible pop bands in the lineup. I mean, good Lord, Sha-Na-Na was there.

Yep, but if you find the file, download and listen to it, you will be enlightened by the raw energy and all of the ways of us dumbasses from the 60's and 70's. It was a fun time and some of the best performers that ever existed. You just don't get that type of raw energy anymore. Everything's all over processed, over digitized, over auto tuned and over produced. In the early 70's, I saw Ten Years After for six bucks in Philly and they played for over 3 hrs! Just Google,
Woodstock Complete Bootlegs. You'll see why the Grateful Dead didn't make the album or the movie.

I could've done without Richie Havens, Ravi Shankar and a few others...

Did not Go....Wanted to but my parents just laughed when I said I wanted to go....
Of course I was only 13 at the time....
In retrospect I'm very glad I did not, even if I had been 18 at the time. Floundering about in the mud for three days is not all it's cracked up to be.
Considering the lack of medical, the fact that most bands were horrible due to a lot of factors, the nostalgia has taken a life of it's own thru rose colored glasses.

Is it worth remembering as a moment in history.. :?: Of course it is but Woodstock is really about signalling the end of a very short era rather than the beginning of the Hippie cultural phenomenon.

An accurate portrayal of the times leading up to Woodstock would be the book by Harvey Kubernik " Canyon of Dreams " The magic and the music of Laurel Canyon
ISBN 978-1-4027-6589-6

I'm sure a few are going to post that I'm cynical but if you were around in the 60's, life was anything but a party. There were some critical events that were in direct opposition to the Peace, Love Culture or the actual myth of it all.
Political upheavals in this country were frightening. Civil rights and the demand to everyone's right was a major battle where too many people died because of standing for what they believed.
I think Woodstock was more of a relief valve than anything else. The expectations of the older generation that the up and coming younger generation would just fall in was in direct contrast to the general mood....

But then, I was only a teen....

I went hear Richie Havens at The Narrows in Fallriver Mass. about 1-1/2 years. He was excellent, back up consisted of a Cellist and a Jazz Guitarist.
