As a few others have already noted, there's been a new series introduction from Fender this morning -- check 'em out:

http://www.fender.com/pawnshop

The prototypes for these have been floating around our offices for a bit now and my bet's on the Mustang® Special personally -- just a killer guitar in all respects. Also in the lineup is the return of the "'51" concept, which a number of ya'll will vaguely recognize from its previous incarnation as a Squier model. And then an all new concoction, the '72. All good stuff, and we're naturally quite excited to introduce it!

+1 for the Mustang Special!

I played the '72 Pawn Shop Strat today. I liked it a lot. I dig the look, and the Surf Green color I like. It was very light and the U shape neck felt real nice. The humbuckers were completely different from the normal Strat sound. No quack, but I had a nice rockabilly sound going through a Twin Reverb amp.
I also got to play the '51 Pawn Shop Strat but can't give a critique. No sooner I plugged it in, another guy in the room decided to show he was really EVH through a Marshall. The only thing I was able to get is that I liked the neck. It's a modern C, the same as my Am Dlx, but it felt a little smaller. I'm going to have to go back and give the '51 another try.

Why do some guys just gotta sit close to where you're trying out a guitar, and jack it up and blast away? It's like they are saying 'I want you to eat $#!t if you're trying to hear what you're playing" ? It's like pulling up next to someone at a stoplight and turning your overpowered stereo up so they can't hear anything other than your crappy taste in punk or disco!

What Japanese Fender guitars are still regularly imported to US? Seems to me we are getting US (of course), Mexican and Indonesiand Fenders.

Are the Fuji Gen Fenders being manufactured more or less for sale in Japan and Asia now?

I just saw these on Amazon and had a great idea. Instead of farming out these 'guitars' to the Japanese why doesn't Fender make an affordable American guitar for Americans. These things are horrible and grossly overpriced. It's bad enough Fender and practically all guitar manufacturers give away new American gear for free to professional musicians but then make the average American pay ridiculous prices for a domestic guitar that is made for a fraction of the selling price. They're made on an assembly line in a factory for Christ sake not individually, one a day. I know, I know, I'm going to get a lot of crap for this but when I see posts that say prices for these Japanese guitars are justified it makes me wonder if there's some shilling going on and gets me a little angry as well. If you want to make a new/old guitar bring back the Starcaster from the seventies (at a reasonable price). That is a kick $@! axe.

The issue raises question of severely contracting the guitar market such that an American product can be offered at a selling price which will pay the American guitar factory worker a living wage and afford a profit to the company. Doing so will likely reduce the consumer base because the price point will be beyond the ability of that which is currently supporting the current lines. As with many other industries, traditionally American, such as autos, steel, shoes, and furniture, the American workforce has priced itself out of existence. MIA Fenders now constitute a small percentage of the guitars which I see displayed by Guitar Center in the under $1000K category. The American Standard is $999.99 and the American Special a couple of hundred less. The remainder of the line, offered at $700-$1000 retail levle and under, are all BOUSA [built outside USA].

good lord is it freaking annoying to type a long post only to have the website "experience technical difficulties", which is happening a lot.

no time to type it again right now.

since this thread came back I have updated news on the 2011 pawn shop mustang, which everyone was drooling over when they came out in 2011 but which has been a complete flop.

In short, one cannot give those guitars away on ebay anymore. They weigh about 2 pounds. Great guitar for a girl or teenager though.
