Trying to fight off the urge to get another amp, and it ain't working.

Commentary on how it sounds with a strat and/or tele would be appreciated. I already have a 57 Champ reissue, and I really don't need a high wattage amp...but I do like the idea of having another amp as both a backup, and to change things up tonewise.

Even though I also think Marshalls are overpriced, I have been tempted by the Class 5 but will wait until the MKII version arrives.

What mkII version???

The AC4, I thought was pretty bad. Horrible raspy sound, bad speaker, bad cabinet, badly designed internal layout.
The only thing I did like about it was the 5/1/0.25 watt attenuator built in. But the sound got thinner and raspier the more you put onto that.

Since I'm probably not supposed to post links to vendor pages, I'll post these photos:

Rear of combo amp -- note the "headphone jack" trick is now longer necessary as they have a low power mode available.

Then there's the new head:

And cab:

Why would anyone pay £330 for the head (cheapest price at a glance). When you could have the combo for £297?

P.S you could build one for around £180.

Well, the new combo appears to be 359 pounds over at Andertons, so that'd be why one is willing to be 330 for the head.

Of course, the current version of the combo is $399 in the US... even including sales tax (which can reach 10% in some unfortunate parts of CA), it looks like we still get a better deal which you adjust for sales tax versus VAT. It'll be interesting to see what the street pricing is for the MKII in the US.

At any rate, it's always amazing that one can get better prices on Marshalls and Triumphs in the US (especially given the transport costs involved). It's why my father in law will never buy a Triumph -- he thinks it's stupid to pay more because you live a short drive from the factory as opposed to being in the US.

Seems you're living in the UK? Why not buy a Blackstar HT-5? It comes with ISF, so you have US- and UK-sounds combined in one amp.

Cheers

David

I actually don't live in the UK... my wife just happens to hail from there.

In other news, I tried the AC4TV, and basically found this: for the price (plus a little bit more), I think I'd rather have the AC15C1 (much better cleans), BUT... I didn't really care for the way it breaks up (at least using the master volume switch).

The head is a great way of getting rid of all the cabinet and tube rattle. I liked the combo, but just couldn't get past all the cabinet buzz and tube rattle.
