YES, THIS IS WHAT IT'S REALLY LIKE; I DO IT EVERYDAY WITH MY 100 STUDENTS
Next Season on Survivor
Have you heard about the next planned "Survivor" show?
Governor Scott  (Florida), Kathy Black (NYC Schools' Chancellor), Governor Walker (Wis) and Governor Christie (NJ) will be dropped in an elementary school classroom for 1 school year. Each of them will be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a class of 20-25 students.
Each class will have a minimum of five learning-disabled children, three with A.D.H.D., one gifted child, and two who speak limited English. Three students will be labeled with severe behavior problems.
Each of them must complete lesson plans at least 3 days in advance, with annotations for curriculum objectives and modify, organize, or create their materials accordingly. They will be required to teach students, handle misconduct, implement technology, document attendance, write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards, compute grades, complete report cards, document benchmarks, communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences. They must also stand in their doorway between class changes to monitor the hallways.
In addition, they will complete fire drills, tornado drills, and [Code Red] drills for shooting attacks each month.
They must attend workshops, faculty meetings, and attend curriculum development meetings. They must also tutor students who are behind and strive to get their 2 non-English speaking children proficient enough to take the SOLS tests. If they are sick or having a bad day they must not let it show.
Each day they must incorporate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies into the program. They must maintain discipline and provide an educationally stimulating environment to motivate students at all times. If all students do not wish to cooperate, work, or learn, the teacher will be held responsible.
These people will only have access to the public golf course on the weekends, but with their new salary, they will not be able to afford it. There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out to lunch, and lunch will be limited to thirty minutes, which is not counted as part of their work day. They will be permitted to use a student restroom, as long as another survival candidate can supervise their class.
If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials before, or after, school. However, they cannot surpass their monthly limit of copies. They must also continually advance their education, at their expense, and on their own time.
The winner of this Season of Survivor will be allowed to return to their job.

Pass this to your friends who think teaching is easy, and to the ones that know it is hard.

A lot of times teachers are the only bit of moral and social guidance that kids get especially with so many turnkey kids whose parents have little time for as they're too obsessed with getting ahead with their own messed up lives than to bother with the kid's problems.Teachers are the only positive influences that a lot of kids have in their lives and end up being little more than glorified baby sitters because of it.They are not near as compensated nor are there as many as there should be.Class sizes have had a growth explosion and teacher's workloads are almost unmanageable yet they are paid a mere pittance of their worth.

I guess it depends on where you teach! In Maryland the average Teachers salary is almost 57,500 a year (10 Months) almost all counties average between 13 to 15 students a class and a few as low as 12 per class and one county averaged 16. The last ten years pay has increased 32% and 36% of the money used for education goes to Teachers the other 64% goes to Pensions, Benefits, Administration, infrastructure. Not much for them to complain about here.

Maybe if our kids ranked a little higher in math, science, etc. compared with the rest of the world I could sympathize more. I've had too much one-on-one experience with teachers who were total losers. My son's 3rd Grade teacher, when asked by the school paper what were his favorite three things about teaching replied: June, July and August. He was busted for reefer at school.

Do away with tenure for bad teachers and I might join the cause.

mclmk8d, Bro you know we appreciate you here and realize that you are one of the few that would actually try 110%, so, in your case preaching to the choir we are with you. You also know I try not to be negative, so, in Chicago the teachers are teaching the children of the students they failed to teach 20 years ago (or didn't bring those problems out in the open to be dealt with properly) those undesirable teachers are impossible to get removed from the system, and, if you've seen any of the video's of those children killing each other over turf it gives you a whole new viewpoint on kharma. I probably said too much but I hope you know it isn't meant for you.

edited to hopefully make some sense of that mess of words there Bro.

Just think of a teachers weekly wage compared to that of a babysitter. The average babysitter in the UK costs around £8 cash, no tax per hour. That works out to roughly £12 per hour if they were taxed.
Times that by 8 hours (working day, grrrrr Europe) £96.
Times that by thirty, (average class size) £2880.
Times five (working days) £14400.

Would you like your kids educated and prepared for adulthood by the local babysitter?

Solid summed up the frustrations of the Chicago schools tragically well. There are 4th generation welfare families in there. And not only a few...thousand.

Have worked buncha decades at a big corp without union or tenure, dependent entirely on performance. And no automatic raises, either. In bad economies, none for years.

Sardonic experience is, the two shortest lines in the world for employed people are those who think they have too little work to do and those who say they get paid too much money.

My daughter is an English teacher and left teaching because the schools keep forcing Special Ed. classes on them. Teachers don`t need licenses and Master Degrees to coddle criminals. The problem starts in the home. Teachers are just that, teachers. Not Correction Officers which is what it amounts to here in NY. Teachers are under paid and deserve better with what they have to put up with.

Atleast £13000 per week underpaid by my estimation.

Until of course, they say something about 'my bear'. Then of course they go to owing around £10K.

Nah in all seriousness, our kids are our most precious commodity. The absolute luxury that too few recognize. As well as being our future and our carers to some degree in latter years.
However you view em, you can't argue that their an investment.

Shouldn't those we employ to look after them whilst we're at work (because thats what it all boils down to) be individuals of the highest calibre and be paid accordingly.

some teachers in certain areas should get hazardous duty pay.
