The reason the original 51 failed was that it was on the Squire line and thus nobody gave it a chance.

These guitars will also flop though...

Um, guys?? The 51 didn't "fail" as a Squier -- to the contrary, they sold like hotcakes. Just want to make sure we're keeping straight with the facts here.

The model numbers start with 026. If I remember correctly, that means they are made in South Korea.

No, not correct - the Fender Pawn Shop Series is made in Japan. I need ya'll to help me dispell the myth about country of origin on these as I'm seeing a lot of misinformation already spreading on these.

its wasnt until then that the 51's actually started to sell. again thats the word around town.

What you've described above is typical of the life cycle that probably 95% of instruments that are introduced by any manufacturer follow, though, right? The irony here is that you hear more about the Squier 51 because there were far, far more of them out there in the first place. Hence ... actually a very successful product. Make sense?

ok brad im trying to follow you here, so why did fender stop production of something that was so successful?
its important to clear this up so we all can get on the same page, and new comers coming here to seek advice or whatever too can get the correct story as well.

I'd have to say that when I saw the 51 in the Pawn Shop line, I was surprised. In a good way. I honestly think that was a good idea by Fender. The 51 fanatics are gonna be salivating to get their hands on one.

Sorry, looks like the Yawn Shop Series to me. They do nothing for me, but the young kids will probably love them. I never really dug Humbucker's on a Fender, not even the Tele.

Guitars, and particularly niche market guitars, are not like Doritos wherein you build a bunch and then turn around next week and there's recurring demand for the same product -- there's an inevitable bell curve of initial sales that inevitably tapers off. The '51 was clearly a niche product and followed the typical life cycle -- you get in, sell a ton of 'em, and then get out. Again, due to sheer volumes at play in that particular case the "get out" portion of that cycle may have been a bit more visible and as we know the Internet as it is these days tends to blow such things out of proportion. But make no mistake: consumers bought thousands upon thousands of these and the model was quite successful for Squier.

Hey Brad,
Speaking of Japan, has the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear issues had any effect on Fender Japan or supply from them? if so, are there any employees that are affected and are they all accounted for? Surely at the least there will be supply issues from Japan for a short while?

Just curious :)
