have a good oportunity to grab a very slightly use HW1 2007 guitar neck for $100.
guy says there is still finish over spray on the frets upper end, thats how unplayed it is.
he says he bought it and didnt like the big jumbo frets on the guitar and switched necks out. he moved over seas for a while and now hes back. so hes gonna stick with his
MIA standard and pulled the neck out of the closet for ebay. he did say that the heel was sanded a little weird on the high E side. a littlet to rounded and leaves a slight gap to be seen but the pick guard covers it nicely. hum....... i dont know.
i dont have a body to match it up with. i might take a squier apart and use that body for a match up only. heres pics. your thoughts?

I see what he meant about the high E side. It looks a little too shaved on the butt end of the heel. The part that sits parrallel to the neck pickup. It's a bit oblong'ish.

It's 60th anniversary from the look of the button on the back of the headstock.

Myself I don't like big headstocks, but that is in no way a deal breaker.

What I'd do is take my strat body, neck plate and screws/bolts. Then try and put the neck in place before you hand over the moolah. Only because I'm super suspicious of everyone and think it's the first time I've heard of a neck heel being misshapen.
Also take a long rule and a allen key. Just because the upper frets have no wear, it doesn't mean the lower frets are good. Though you will see if their really bad a rule will show exactly how much play the lower frets have had. Look for uneven (up and down) fretline.

If thats all good, $100, I'd rip his arm off for it.

It's weird, I used to hate the big headstocks, but now they kinda look cool.

Wish I'd picked up all those "cruddy" early 70s guitars when they were giving them away. :?

Oh, well...live and learn.

+1 on Niki's advice, by the way...if it's "mechanically" sound, that's a heck of a deal.

I've been looking for one myself - the dang things are sky high on eBay and who knows what you're really bidding on. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

ok niki, im gonna take some calipers and measure the heel side to side too. if one is shallow i could always shim it i guess. i planed on measuring the frets for wear. i have my straight edge and my fret rocker checker. i dont have a body to put this on but was thinking to disassemble a squier to see the fit. is that a good idea? would it even work?
$100 is a good deal. anything else i need to check for niki or anybody?
i dont mind the big headstocks, i kinda like them actually.

It will plant on a jackson body without much problem. (screwholes out of position but thats about it, the pocket should be ok). Or take the neck off your strat body!

Don't tell me you don't have a Strat!!!

Yes a Squier body will work out fine.

of course i do, but the squier is the only one i'll take apart for this little transaction lol.
i just want to make sure theres a snug fit in the neck pocket with no play room. if theres play room im gonna pass on it. i just dont want to screw this up and buy a bad neck.
should i try to turn the truss nut as well to see if it binds up.
ok what is the deal breaker on the heel area?

The deal breaker is heel width. If that is off forget it. Or if the owner has had ast it with a sander or something.

Get the neck off your strat man. You may like this neck better, if it's all good. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

ok he did say that it was a bit off on the back corner but the pickguard covers that. im gonna look to see if there is any sanding marks. he says he didnt alter it in any way, that when he took it apart yrs ago it was like that from when he bought it new.
he changed the neck out because he was use to playing smaller frets and the HW1 was uncomfortable after a couple weeks. he said back then he didnt know that you could get a fret level done to bring the height down. he had to go over seas for a few yrs and couldnt take his guitars. well when he got back he just played the guitar as is and left the hw1 neck in the closet. so now he wants to get rid of it to fund other purchases.
he sounds pretty legit, but most crooks do too lol.

Comfort has more to do with width rather than height, when it comes to frets.

Be carefull mate, this is starting to sound a bit fishy.

Guy buys guitar, doesnt like frets so relaces whole neck?

Neck has problems from new???? (next to never with Fender. Very rare)

Whole time abroad BS, like it has anything to do with anything.

Hmmmmmm the story is enough to put me off, unless I could put that neck on a Fender Strat body and see it's all ok. After I'd checked the fretware.

Do yourself a favour. Take a allen key (hex thingy you lot call it), a straight edge and some feeler gauges. Set the neck straight. Keep the straightedge on the fret tops, then measure between the straightedge and the markers on the fretboard.
If it fits a neck pocket ok. (which you'll have difficulty seeing ((though not imposible)) because of the 22nd fret).

Look for a con, cos theres too much story going on.

ok is it gonna be harder to set the neck straight since its not connected to a body or should i connect it to the squier first then set it straight?
