Texas Cannonball and Woman Accross the River are his last two records. They were recorded at Shelter Records, which was Leon Russell's label. His main axe would probably be considered a red Gibson ES-355. He played a few different amps, but he is known for playing a Super Reverb. 4 10" speakers and metal finger picks...the guy got some serious bite.

I believe he preferred a Quad Reverb...

One of my favorite album is Larger Than Life, the live songs on there have one of the best 355 tone I ever heard!

Freddy along with EC, used to frequent Tulsa quite a bit in the early 70's.They'd pop in the old Stables Lounge and jam away with a band called Tulsa County. EC later made them his band for 8 years..... No cover brother.......... :P

Freddie King was one of the greatest to ever wield a 335.

Early Johnny Guitar Watson is amazingly cool as well (I like his early stuff better than the later funk material)..."Lookin' Back" is just awesome.

I got to see Albert Collins a few months before he died, and that man's powerful sound would humble you...and he's from Houston, TGS! 8)

We can't overlook the influence of Clifford Antone, either. If you like blue, you have to see the documentary about Antone's...

I had the opportunity to play with some Ft Worth legends before their passing--U.P. Wilson and Robert Ealey, who in the fifties billed themselves as the Boogie Chillun. They predated the guitar & drums duo (a la Black Keys or White Stripes) by fifty years or so. They were gracious and encouraging to a young skinny white kid who played harp but wouldn't touch a guitar in public, out of fear of being humiliated...

Not really. I don't find anything original about him. I go back a little further.
Here's two of my favorites. Long John Hunter and Lonnie Brooks.
I photographed them at the Pocono Blues festival a ways back. Very nice folks. Lonnie's son Ronnie Baker Brooks is seriously dangerous on guitar.

Lonnie's originally from Louisiana but does some cool Texas Swing.
Long John Hunter is legendary.

I remember the first time I heard Freddie King. I felt like I had decoded the Vaughan/Clapton enigma.
I was able to make a lot of connections between the classic rock I already knew and the blues I was just then hearing.
