I was cruising through town today and saw a blast from my past - the first vehicle that I ever used to haul a band and gear!

Image

It's a 1958 Chevy Brookwood station wagon - three seats and a two-stage tailgate. We used to pack four guys, three guitars, three amps and a set of drums into this vehicle. I was the only one in the band with access to a car that would hold all of us and our gear.

Wish I could find the pictures of me and the boys and the real thing!

My first band's gig vehicle was a 9 passenger Pontiac Safari wagon. The guy who owned it used to carry us around from gig to gig for free because we told him he was our manager- he wasn't the brighest candle in the candlabra. It was pure luxury when I bought my '74 bright orange Chevy window van, that van could hold all the band plus all the gear and light show.

please tell me it wasnt a yellow 10speed was it?

i think my first get together was a kiss cover jam off. we all had our own ideas on how ace did it.
i gotta tell you, ace was the man that put the guitar in my hands. he was cool.
he didnt do anything major, my mind blowing solos, no stage dives, no complex
guitar arrangements, he was just solid rock. call him a 3 or 4 chord wonder but he played those 3 or 4 chords so well that.......he.......... cant put it into words.
truth be told and everybody honest, i bet he put more guitars in kids hands than just about anybody out there. he might not have been the biggest influence, but he damn sure got folks started. (again truth be told) i'll always confess my kiss roots.
they rocked.

LOL! I was gigging before I could drive, too, and then when I had my learner's permit I had to have my dad go to gigs with me for six months. And he wouldn't let me haul any of the other guys either.

But before I drove, I used to trudge 12 miles (uphill all the way) through ice and snow, guitar on a strap around my neck, amp in one and then the other, to the nearest bus stop...

I was 16 and in a band with my uncles and I don't remember what year the VW Van was but I do remember that POS had the worst heater in the world, giging in Michigan in the winter time made for a very cold ride :!: Thank goodness we didn't get many gigs :!:
