For me, the three pillars of modern rock are: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.

The Beatles without a doubt...I saw it all happen and like someone said, the Beatles opened the flood gates for the British invasion.....honestly if they had not existed, the history of R&R would not be anything similar to what we know.

I was never much of a beatles fan I like some of their songs but never moved by any of them. George Harrisons music I liked much better.

The Beatles were the defib paddles that brought the heart of rock and roll back to life.

i dont know if i could agree with that statement right there. rock n roll was still finding itself when they hit the labels.
they might have been a booster in the picture, but i wouldnt say they brought it back to life.

The thing with questions like this, it seems, is that people often interpret them as "Which do you like better?". You may like one more, but saying the one you like is more influential JUST BECAUSE you like them more is like saying the invention of the lightbulb was more important than the invention/discovery of electricity. Sure, both were important, but one is infinitely more important than the other.

i agree 100% with you on that right there. if i would have thought, maybe i would have worded this differently.

Which one, Floyd?

I base my opinion on the folk music domination in the early 60s, and cornball r&r such as the beach boys and American bandstand. The stones are possibly the best r&r band ever, but the beatles were seminal.

And I would add that the 50s were smokin with r&r. It seemed to have hit a big lull.

I dont think many will dispute that the Beatles had more overall impact. For my money (THE STONES) have it. After reading some of your other poste I agree that the Beatles gave Life in a difirent direction to rock music but not new life. wee were all doing prity well with what wee had. Blues has always been my thing but i miss that old Doo-op that died about the same time. thank the Beatles for that.

After Buddy Holly died and Elvis went into the army, music had gotten very anemic, with people like Paul Anka and Pat Boone and others doing the things they did best which was white bread, little cutesy songs that lacked for a better word, soul.
The Beatles were also doing two minute love songs, but there was a rebellious side to them, their hair for instance, which nowadays is stupid to even think of as rebellious, but it was...and they wrote their own music and it was good and different, whatever they did was a hit at the time and they progressed into the drug era which was reflected in their music...they kind of led the way...and along that way came the more raw Rolling Stones, and The Animals etc.,people who were more into the black blues and their music revolved around that style.
Here in the USA,those songs and artists were not being listened to by most white people, with the music of Motown being the exception, and as the late '60s came around blues/rock was riding high,Cream,Hendrix,Zepplin, etc.
The way the Beatles led the "British Invasion",and the music that followed and morphed into blues/rock,acid/rock,heavy metal and so on,well, that's why I said what I did...at least in my mind it all started with John,Paul,George and Ringo.

ok interesting indeed. i wasnt around in those early beatles days to disagree with you,
or agree for that matter lol.
i like to learn from the folkks that were there than to base my opinions from reading.
however, i did get to see elvis just before he died. what a freakin rush that was to see.
my cousin was a body guard at the time for the president. he had "special" privledge's if you know what i mean. that was a wild concert im telling you.
i'll never forget asking him why all the women were crying. this was before elvis even hit the stage. like an hour before. i was so confused by that. i was young ya know.
man when the lights went out and the curtains went up and out came elvis with CC ryder, omg, the place went up. if it were not for being allowed to set where we were, we would have never heard the song. i was the only 1 setting for like 20 minutes. chics rushed the stage like starving dogs, pushing and shoving. it was that quick too.
i'll never forget that show. ive been to a lot of metal shows and got to play my part in a lot of metal shows. never ever have i seen a whole coliseum pop off like that, to that degree, that quick ever. it was something to see and from my seating area it was something to remember.

There was much more to the Beatles than "sappy love songs" a lot of their songs were social/political commentaries such as She's Leaving Home,A Day In The Life,Taxman, Piggies,She Said,She Said etc. and so on.
