Both are big, but figure the Beatles broke up around 1970 and are still huge today without touring and without putting out any new material. I'd have to say the Beatles are bigger. I'm a big fan of both but the Beatles IMO were more creative and went beyond being a rock and roll band. The Stones on the other hand are IMO the definitive rock and roll band.

well to make it fair we would have to have a stones cut off period since the beatles arent together any more. so let say during the beatles time frame on this question.

I don't much care for The Stones, so I voted Beatles, but lately I prefer The Kinks to either.

The Beatles were the ones that kicked down the doors for The British Invasion and the Stones merely walked in on their bootheels.Having said that I'm not a Stones hater-far from it as I have every album and most singles that they cut while Brian was alive-I quit on them after that but that's another rant.
When The Beatles appeared on the scene the whole world became Anglophiles and the Stones,Gerry and the Pacemakers,Billy J. Kramer,Freddy and the Dreamers and just about anyone British with a modicum of talent was hot.The Stones have longevity going for them but when both were on the scene The Beatles without a doubt had the edge for popularity.

The Beatles have/are
A) more lasting fame and popularity
B) Most fans agree that everything they put is gold, whereas the Stones have had some pretty unbearable releases
C) They haven't toured or released any new material in over 40 years but if you walk up to anyone on the street and mention The Beatles, they'll at least know who they were. Not so with the Stones.
D) Literally the most influential musical act of all time. Almost any musician in any genre has been influenced by them in some way.

So, I vote Beatles here.

Saw them in Fort Worth on the STP tour in 1972, with Mick Taylor and in !981 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, with Ron Wood. They always delivered the goods. The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World during those times.........JMO..........Mike

Never been a big fan of either band, and I wasn't even a twinkle in my daddy's eye when they were in their heyday, but I vote Beatles on this one. The Beatles were like ground zero for crazy fans and the rock and roll lifestyle. The stones did perfect the sex, drugs and rock and roll ideals, but I think the Beatles have had more of an overall impact in the music world.

Was he in The Beatles, or The Stones?

No, but they both used the Major/Minor system, and so are indebted to Bach.

The Beatles definitely had a classical influence to their music thanks mostly to Sir George Martin, like when he inserted the Bach influenced keyboard part into In My Life and John's beautiful Because is merely Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata played backwards.BTW that came about when Yoko(whose a trained concert pianist in her own right)was playing Moonlight Sonata at their home and John asked her if she could play it backwards and that's where Because was born.
