Hey all,
ok basically I am in a funny situation. I am a senior in high school and looking to upgrade my guitar and amp before I leave for school. I have a job that is basically so I dont ask my parents for money. I am thinking a $100 amp and a used strat so around $250. So at that total it doesnt sound to bad but I cant seem to figure out how I wanna cut some cost and get some cash to do this at some point. Any advice? Just small things that might help? Thanks fellas

Yeh- put a bunch of junk on craigslist- junk meaning stuff. Stay away from your Dads tools and whatnot though.

Ok...take 350 which is about the amount you want to spend. Divide it by the number of pay periods left until you graduate (I'm assuming your paychecks come in bi-weekly and that you graduate in June) and set that amount to the side each pay-day, and leave it alone! By my calculations, if you put away about 60 dollars every 2 weeks from now until you graduate, you should have the $350 you need.
Also, if you have any skills which may be in demand, doing odd jobs for people can be a quick way to rack up cash. (i.e. working on cars, landscaping, basic handyman type stuff)
Good luck...and remember, learning to save and manage your money can make life much easier for you in the future when it comes time to start a family.

Put a used guitar on Layaway at the Guitar store, that way you are committed, and you have a short time frame to pay it off. Take all your extra cash and get it quick. You will be broke for a while, but it will be over soon and you will have your guitar, and hopefully a better appreciation for it because of the "suffering" you went through to get it. Then buy a Roland Cube. Great cheap amp. 8)

put all of it in a un-openable tin, and cut down on doing the things you like that cost money (eg, buying coffee for me  )

Hi cavsrock08,

Take your lunch to work from home and avoid the vending machines, and if you have not already done so, cut out the soda pop, potato chips, sweets and fast food. You might be surprised at how much you can save on the cost of just those things. Possibly at least $20 or more a week right there. Mountain Dew is the tough one for me.

Everyday I take $2 of my pocket money and put it on the side. I also don`t like the weight of change in my pocket so after buying something I put the change away too. When I get enough change together I roll it up and turn it in to a store that needs the change. I take that money and the $2 I save everyday and put it in my bank account. You`d be surprised how fast that money adds up. If you can`t afford the $2 then put $1 away, or whatever you can afford. Once you get in the habit of saving you`ll see that you really don`t miss that money. Then when it comes time to get something you want, the money is already there.

I save all my change too. In about three months I usually have $90. That is good. All Yall have some really good ways to save money.

The guy you want to talk to is our drummer. He is so tight - a gnat has nothin' on this guy. He's got a ton of jack. -- don't tip, go to someone elses house to eat, ride with someone else to save gas, don't take your girlfriend out, never buy a shirt, get your friends to do all your home repairs for a bottle of Jack Daniels, never do anything, find out what the city has for free. Put off all health problems that you need to spend money on, in other words just suffer, don't let anyone come to your house because they may break something and you'll have to replace it--- If you do all that and whatever else you can think of-- I swear people will just give you a bass. That's how our drummer does it. He's loaded. The ultimate money not spender. He only paid 300 for a 78 P bass!! 350 for his drums!! It's really good stuff too!!!

I can say all that stuff about him cause I've known him since he was 11!!!! He was that way then too. Bless his heart I want to go smack him right now!!!!

Would it be possible to pick up a few shifts during the week, even temporarily until you've managed to earn a few extra hundred dollars? The free time missed will be a pain, but as they say, it's "No pain, no gain".

Best of luck with everything, as well as your studies. 8)

I would like to thank you all for your feedback. Well I think I am gonna run with a couple of these ideas. The good news is, if Kentucky beats N.C. tomorrow, I win my pool and $200. So that would be a nice foundation. :D

Put flyers around your neighbourhood and offer your services to mow lawns, dig up flower beds(it's getting to be that time of year)walk dogs, paint fences or any other odd jobs that you can think of.After you get a couple of satisfied customers word of mouth will do the rest.
