how many of you play strictly rythym? i prefer it but i'm asked to play solos on several tunes we do. don't get me wrong, i enjoy playing solos. i guess i like laying back in the groove and establishing the foundation more than soloing.
am i alone?

I'm with you Jeebus. That sounds like pretty much every band experience I've had.
All I want to do is stand up the back near the drums and knock out chords whilst smiling politely.
I usually get roped into playing bloody silly solos.
It's half the reason I end up leaving bands.

I remember a John Lennon quote,"I'm a rhythm guitar player,I can make a band move."

I'm a lead player, always have been, but I like playing rhythm and making the band tight.

I Like Both. It's Hard To Watch Kirk. H And Not Want To Play The Solo When He Does. It's Always Good To Be Versatile Ala Judas Priest.

I enjoy both, but in certain situations it can be fun to hang out with the bass player and just knock out some chords.

85% of what I play is rhythm, but I'm always labeled a "lead guitarist" because I do take solos and add some fills if it fits the song. As soon as I realized that I play more rhythm than lead I've tried improving my rhythm playing. I think I've always focused a little more on lead, so it's a challenge to find interesting and different things to play as far as rhythm goes. Especially since both bands I'm currently playing with have another guitar player who plays strictly rhythm.

To me, you can't beat the excitement of soloing. It can be a total adrenalin rush sometimes. You know it's comin', and it's sink or swim time. You're in the spotlight, all eyes are watching you. When it's a disaster, it sucks bad. But when you pull it off, and you feel like you were flawless, it's an unbeatable feeling.

I've always had a hint of competitiveness inside me. I've never really liked just hanging back churning out chords. Not saying it's a bad thing, just not my style I guess. I've gotta put myself up front for those moments. I always feel like I owe it to the team to have those shining moments for the entertainment factor of the band. And that's what I feel like I'm competing with. Not necessarily other guitar players. Just being in those moments and doing the best I can.

When that time comes, and the spotlight is on, I want the band to be proud to have me in those moments. Just as important as it is for a Rhythm player to hold the groove down, I think it's equally as important to have someone who will step into that spotlight at times and do those extra things that make the band just that much more entertaining. I personally like doing it, and I'm very proud to be doing those kinds of things for the band I'm in.

In those types of songs you can play lots of variations of the chords and be as creative as the lead player.

+1

I love to get one of those bluesy-almost-jazz T-Bone Walker rhythms going and make minor little variations/fills that enrich the song (but never really "soloing")--makes it sound fat and sassy. Nat King Cole's version of Route 66 is a good place to start with that style.

I would rather play rhythm all the time. Less showmanship and relaxed enjoyment.
