Liz Taylor was elegance and beauty personified, she was an incredible beauty from her debut in National Velvet right up to her dying day.She was not only a stunning beauty but a stunningly great actress.I remember when our class went to see Liz and Richard in The Taming of The Shrew when we studied it in school, it was the first time I'd really seen her on the big screen and from then on I was captivated by those beautiful violet eyes. RIP Liz thanks for keeping us all spellbound.

SBLS--I think Mr. Lee is not quite smiling at me--As a conscientious objector to any war, I would have refrained from participation on either side; but I could not have supported a cause which had ownership of another human being as a plank in its platform (although the extended skirmish in which he took part wasn't solely over the [immoral] issue of slavery). Besides, my scattered ancestors were not in the US until 40 years after that war was over.
In other words, don't "lump me in" without knowing my views.

Back to the original subject at hand; as a person born in 1970, I was originally aware of the lovely Ms. Taylor as an "older" actress (funny, she wasn't that much older than I am now, and I don't think I'm old...yet).

But last summer the Lady Armadillo and I watched "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", and oh my...she was a stunner. Those eyes could jump-start a 59 Dodge with a bad battery.

Views are what they must be, I have fond memories of the south and Texas in particular so I think of it as a place were many brave souls lived and died for their fellow southerners and not for any other reason. A conscientious objector am I except when facing the enemy, planks and platforms aside. Had I known your birth right wasn't what I thought from your user name I wouldn't have lumped you in with an old romantic like myself, after all, I dated the great-grandaughter of one of Quantrill's raiders and, not choosing sides, I would defend her honor against yankee carpet baggers or any body else for that matter. My apology's to you, Sir.

Apology accepted. The south (and southern culture) hold a place dear in my heart. However, since the basis of the Confederacy's economy was based on an immoral principle (involuntary labor force), I have a hard time reconciling the romanticism some people feel for that era. It was a fascinating era from a historical standpoint.
Did the Confederacy have a point about state's rights? Yes, and that's what the Texas Revolution of 1836 was (basically) about as well (except it was the against the Mexican Federal Government, not the US Federal Government).
You have to remember, too that Texas was basically blockaded from action during the Civil war after the North took control of the Mississippi...most of Louisiana and all of Texas was out of commission. Many Northerners (ok, Yankees) label Texas as a Southern state, and while it partially is, it has a vastly different culture from other regions of the south...there's even vastly different cultures within the state itself. There's a marked difference between Texas and Lousiana and Mississippi and Tennessee and Georgia--accents, landscape, food, even music.
(Of course, Texians have always had a soft spot in their hearts for the boys from Tennessee, especially since Mr. Crockett brought his band down to help at the mission in San Antonio Del Bexar).
I am proud of my heritage as a native Texan, but I am also aware of the inequities visited upon my fellowman in history. My wife's grandparents, uncles/aunt and older cousins (Mexican descent) had multiple unfair situations throughout their lives, and while it wasn't me or my family who did those things, I am aware of the sensitivity of the memory.
I guess what I'm trying to say is this: I'm conflicted between the good parts of southern culture (hospitality, genteel manner, fierce independence) and the bad (take your pick). Likewise for my native Texas.
...and as far as defending the honor of any fair lass (no matter what her origin and ancestry) or helping a neighbor unjustly attacked--that isn't an act of war, that is an act of gallantry and I would not back down from that challenge.

You can take the boy out of Ole' Dixieland, Lord, but you'll never take Ole' Dixie from a boy. You're golden Bro. I'm just an old curmudgeon with a healthy distrust for politicians mostly from the north but the south has had their share too.

Immorality as described in some history was truly propaganda pushed on the American public when corrupt, greedy, lying yankee politicians funded John Brown and his army of cut-throats called abolitionists in order to start the war between the states. Freeing slaves was absolutely the the right thing to do, but the way it was done was wrong. My guess is in all of the time passed, since the war almost as many so called free blacks have either died or had their lives ended, for all practical purposes, in yankee prisons. No politician ever talks about that horrible mistreatment of their fellow man. The greatest number of Rebel soldiers that lost their lives defending the south never owned a slave and wouldn't have wanted to. You won't hear that from any modern day historians either. Corrupt greedy lying southern politicians overlooked rule#2 "never underestimate the other guys greed" northern politicians were much greedier and after it was over, like all turncoats, those southern politicians either moved north or sold what was left of the south to the conniving northerners. I didn't doubt you Screamin' Armadillo, I'll be on your side when the shooting starts Brother.

Armadillo,
I understand what you're saying and I won't get into a discussion about the pros and cons of a long ago settled argument, especially since the history has been tainted by both sides in justification of the more than 600,00 who were killed.
But I know you probably know this because you seem to be more aware of the history of your fair state than most, and of the association of our volunteer state, but the obstacle of the big muddy river didn't prevent the early enlistment of thousands of Texans whose graves lie in the Southland east of the Mississppi...and after the blockade they were cut off from their home state, much like the "Orphans" from the border state of Kentucky....
there's a Confederate cemetery near here in Franklin Tn.,where many Texans are buried who died with Generals who had names you will recognize,Cleburne and Granbury.
I visit the graveyard often and think of those boys who lay so far away from their homes.
War is a brutal thing indeed.
SBLS....thanks again for the compliments.
How did Liz Taylor starts this?

The violet-eyed beauty has gone on to the next realm. Can one even imagine the party going on, there?
