Ok, this could either sink like a stone or do quite well, either way I figure this forum is missing something like this - seeing as most, if not all, of us on here are keen on playing and listening to music. The "Foreign Bands" thread gave me the idea (that and seeing it work well on other forums); maybe we could all learn about some new artists that haven't yet made the leap across the pond, or maybe hear of some lesser known artists from other places in the world.

So the idea is simple: post some bands/artists whose music you enjoy listening to. Include a few youtube/myspace links to songs as well as a little info on them/their music.

It's probably not worth posting anything about SRV or Hendrix (and the like) seeing as pretty much everyone knows who they are, at the very least everyone on this forum anyway. But I guess if you feel so strongly about them then why not

I guess I may as well start :)

Electrelane

From wikipedia:

Electrelane was a British alternative rock band, formed in Brighton, England in 1998 by Verity Susman and Emma Gaze. The band comprised Susman, Gaze, Mia Clarke, and Ros Murray. Their music draws from wide range of influences including Neu!, Stereolab, Sonic Youth, and The Velvet Underground. Although the band is an all-female group and has strong feminist and political views in their personal lives, they generally prefer to not communicate that directly to their fans or through their music; one exception is their inclusion of the protest song "The Partisan," which they began playing while on tour in the United States during the months preceding the 2004 Presidential election. Electrelane disbanded in 2007.

A friend introduced me to this band a while ago and I loved their music almost the instant I heard it. They can be fast and punchy or slow and reflective, with their music bearing resemblances to punk and post rock.

Some songs both from the album 'Rock It to the Moon':

Film Music
Blue Straggler

Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip

Ok so I'm not expecting much good reaction to this but here goes nothin'.
I'm gonna let the youtube videos do the talking:

Thou Shalt Always Kill
The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Letter From God To Man

Incredibly clever lyrics by a good poet to some utterly brilliant beats.

And Finally:

Gruff Rhys

Founder of a band called 'The Super Furry Animals", Gruff Rhys has since branched out into a few side projects and a solo career (if you can call it that). His debut album is called 'Candy Lion'. It's a fun and really enjoyable album with songs about...erm candy lions, an attempted plane hijacking and painting people blue amongst other things.

Here's one song from the album called 'Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru', a catchy little number...in welsh!

Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru

--------------------------

Ok, so I hope this does take off 'cause I look forward to hearing other people's suggestions - I'm always looking out for new (and old!) bands to get into.

Recommend away! :D

This could be quite interesting. I am always looking to give a listen to bands that are new to me.

Ya know....I'm not into pop much but damn I really like a video I caught the other night by a band called Rooney. The track is "I should have been after you".

Very 70's arrangement, I hear some Todd Rudgren in there, maybe some Journey or Styx.

Check it out: http://www.rooney-band.com/player/default.aspx/mid/3751

Yeah man, I can hear Zep, Styx. Uriah Heep.....the stuff I was trying to write 30 years ago. I dig it. Real rock. I love hearing the organ in rock again. Nothing helps a good rock song like an overdriven Hammond B3.

Wolfmother are good :)

I think a band most people on here'll like is 'Hijak Oscar'. They're a ridiculously talented blues/rock band, reminiscent of Zep and the like with a modern twist. Tom Waits even comes to mind.

Here are some videos of them from when they played on a talent show (which they didn't win - weren't mainstream enough for the record contract - lame!)

Bitter Carnival

Greed

Social Immunity

yeah, their album is great and i think they are in the process of recording another... i've heard people say they're too simple or too much like other bands, but its simple rock and much better than most stuff today that you hear on the radio

another is rocco deluca and the burden, a soulful songwriter who plays a dobro resonator and makes so good music

For Obscuring Classics, I'd recommend Leon Russell, Lonnie Mack, and Little Feat.

There's a group on Myspace called, "A New Shade". Pretty good Heavy Stuff.
