Long story but one of my lifetime favorites.
I pull up at a local lake to go fishing, I see this old Black man sitting alone fishing and I go to say howdy and see if anything is bitting, you can clearly see the man is fishing for peace and quiet more than a few fish to fry.
We chat about the same old stuff everyone does when they meet, he seems glad to have someone to talk to and so i hang out and fish with him.
He sees i'm wearing a BB king shirt or something like that and says to me " you like the blues ? " I tell him I LOVE the blues and that I play Guitar (mostly the blues).
He says" I play the blues too, you may have heard of some of the guys I played with"
So I asked him who it was, he says "muddy waters, Howlin Wolf".
I gotta tell you I nearly fell off my bucket when I realized who I was fishing with.
Several other trips to the lake and a few at the bait shop hanging out I was able to chat with Pinetop, I went to his concert sometime after his 90th Birthday and He ROCKED the house !!!!
I just heard the news that one of the greats has passed on.
So Long Pinetop !!!!Thanks !!!!

I got to meet him and see him play when he showed up at a blues jam at Antone's last summer. I'm really thankful that I did, being my age and listening to the music that I do I very rarely get opportunities to actually get to see the people that I listen to. :(

He played on the first "true" blues album I ever owned--Muddy Waters' "Hard Again"....just those fills alone make him a legend in my mind.

I got to see him at Antone's in Austin about twenty years ago. With a left hand like his, they didn't really have to have a bass player--he could carry the rhythm all by himself.

RIP, Joe Willie...

I first saw Pinetop with Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter back in the early 80's.
I had the pleasure of seeing him again this past summer at the Pocono Blues Festival.
He was playing with the "Chicago Blues Legends", and was joined by Hubert Sumlin, Bob Margolin, and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith".
Pinetop and Hubert only came out for two or three songs and it was sad to see both of them hooked up to oxygen. But they still rocked the blues and finished with a stellar version of " Got My Mojo Workin' "with Pinetop on vocals.
R.I.P. Pinetop.. :(

I have so many recordings with Pinetop's unique keyboard work on them-dozens I guess-with all the blues greats from Sonny Boy Williamson to Howlin' Wolf.I missed out on the chance to see him when he played here as my back was so bad at the time I couldn't have made it out of the house for the Second Coming.Farewell Pinetop, and thanks for your beautiful music and your huge contribution to the blues. No doubt you'll be jammin' tonight with Muddy,The Wolf and the rest of my heroes.

When you start to think of all of the Blues guys pinetop acted as a sideman for, He was involved with nearly every blues artist that gave us modern blues, 1960's on up.

Can you imagine very many others that had that much influence on the Blues ?
If he had been a guitar player he would be on the cover of every guitar magazine next month, I think he still should be !!!

I have a great picture of Pinetop giving my wife a big old hug and he signed some ticket stubbs for me too.

Pinetop was the finest piano man to ever play the blues.

What a great guy he was.

He took up piano when an injury in a knife fight made him put down the guitar.

RIP Pinetop, you'll be missed. It was an honor to see him play live, what a great show! He was such a huge part of Muddy's music... the last few albums, specially Muddy Mississippi Waters Live, are some of my favorite Blues albums. There's a Legacy Edition of the Live album, some extra songs, including Pinetop Boogie Woogie and Kansas City performed by both Muddy and Pinetop. You owe it to yourself to get a copy of this album ASAP! Some of the greatest music ever IMO.
