Fret not, it isn't going to happen.

Although you have been spot-on for this entire thread, on this particular point you underestimate the stupidity of American politicians. All it takes is a small group of policy-makers to persuade some of his brethren that an invasion is in "the best interests of the United States..."

If a politician's backers can make a buck off of this, and that politician has enough power in certain committees/task forces, there could be some terrible repercussions for everyone involved.

Well you're never going to see me commenting on anyone's party politics - haha! But I have been paying careful attention to the remarks of many American politicians on this over the last couple of weeks, because so much of the diplomatic activity leading up to the action has been about getting America on side - but not too involved (from everybody's point of view).

I've certainly heard some wild statements here and there, but at least as far as those with real jobs to do on this I have been mostly impressed with the level of sense that's been expressed. There are all kinds of uncertainties and worries, naturally. Doubts over what can be achieved and regarding America's own particular interests - which is perfectly reasonable. But most of them seem to come to pretty much the right conclusion, far as I've seen.

As often, I have a happier opinion of America than many of the Americans I talk to! :)

Cheers - C

You're right about the surprising sense of restraint that has been shown--I think most of the politicians realize that a large percentage of their constituency (war hawks included) are war-weary at this point and are slow to jump into anything that could be misconstrued as yet another war...

The U.S. is always the one that is expected to get involved to the point of spending $$$$$$$$$$, its time to stop, and let the rest of the world give till it hurts. Wee have homeless and hungry of our own to take care of. We also need to keep our military at home demand that the U.N. do there job.

in short before I get timed out
The Arab league should be taking control and forcing the UN's hand not us begging the Arab league to come on board.
Are we also going to be as forcible against Syria, Yemen, Bahrain who it seems have Iran and Saudi's squaring up and bearing arms on their populations who are uprising.
Biggest worry is would some of these despot dictators join forces, or are they at present stockpilling weapons for the UN's nextintervention.
the European countries involved and the US are only in my eyes making themselves a bigger target than they already are to the fundamentaltits in that region.

just in, Israel have just launched missiles in the Gazza strip

ps Britain and France ran the three regions which make up Libya as is today after the war under the UN and only left when King Idris returned from exile only when foreign interests were removed " sacre bleu & thats not cricket " were only some of the mumblings overheard
Also abstaining on a vote as crucial to life and limb as this as China, Germany, India, Russia and the others did along with Saudi and other Arabs who deny UN airspace , shames them all in my eyes.
