Traces of radiation have been detected in California. I'm now 100% certain the US and Japanese governments aren't giving us the full story, and there very well may be something to worry about for the west coast.

I wouldn't worry about it. I stay in Aberdeen, and due to the large amounts of granite used in buildings here the radiation levels are more than twice as high as most other cities, but it still doesn't cause any damage.

To quantify it a little, in the areas around the plants in Japan there have been worries about higher radiation being found in the milk. But you would have to drink more than four pints of it a day for a year to equal the same amount of radiation as one CT scan.

If there was any serious levels of radiation to cause any damage, it wouldn't take long to notice.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Theres traces of radiation everywhere. What do you think the computer screen, cellphone and valve amp all give off.
Also not meaning to be funny, but the US media does rely a lot on generating hysteria.

How many miles to japan? The radioactive zone of a 1megaton warhead is what 2/300 miles diameter max, largely depending on weather circumstances. You're a bit further away than that, luckily enough. How much radiation is coming out the thing, are they looking at the equivalent to a meg yet, or a 20 meg?

Some decent reading here for the average bloke. Not totally accurate, not wholly inaccurate though. Good enough for guitarists to get their heads into it a bit.

Floyd, Bro, there aren't any nuclear physicists in the Lounge. Radiation is a part of this planet. Chill. Besides a little exposure might create The Atomic Bluesman.

Just for a bit more scare mongering. This page is taken from

I am in favour of an Atomic Bluesman with a strat playing through radioactive pickups 8)

But seriously Riley, the French have been nuclear weapon tests done in Western Australia I do believe.. Queensland would be more likely to be detecting radiation from that I reckon.

NZ has allways been firm about our anti-nuclear policy- something I have even questioned myself- even recently. We have been ousted from ANZUS treaty as we made it clear to the USA that we dont want nuclear powered ships in our waters, and had one of our greenpeace ships bombed because of our prtesting in the islands.. but we have still been strong on that one. But I guess this type of disaster proves that no matter how safe you think your grid/power station may be and modern equipment is safe- you can never be 100% sure. Ever.

I hope that this can be fixed, it seems that help is being drawn on amidst a lot of international concern is saying something about how severe this distater can be... :(

I have depleted uranium pole-pieces in my strat's pickups. They give off an annoying hum but only when not plugged in. Should I be concerned?

The Japanese are sending a fire truck to dowse that Strat with water, quick!

Of course, the water will ruin the guitar - but that'll be no problem for you, will it? :D

Cheers - C

If you start getting a tingling feeling in your tongue or start tasting lead all of the time you are in for a trouble... if not, there is not much to worry about... FOR NOW
