A wise man once said, before you can play good "Blues" on a guitar you must have a "Song", that probably came from a group of workers chanting a "rhythm" as they moved along . Working in a cotton field or Gandy Dancers working on a RR track , or a man or woman crying over a broken heart . Maby even a broken down old guitar player praying for a good house and a bunch of big tippers so he could buy a good jug of booze . All of that being said , the onley way to get that song is to live it , feel it in your hart . First come up with a good song , learn it get to understand it read between the lines , see and feal the pain , and it will start to come to you . When you think you'v got it sing it over and over until it comes to you automatically . Then maybe your getting close . Then and only then , pick up your guitar and come up with some chords to match . You are going to be surprised what they will be . Now practice it until it sounds good to you . Then all alone in your music room add some of your own licks , and the song will slowly become a part of you . Congrats , you've done it . Once you've done it "1000" times you can call your self a "Blues Man" . PS: I'm not there yet but i'm working on it.

I wasn't sure about the point of your post, so I thought that maybe it was one of those "spot the mistakes" games. (Very hard read)

That actually sounds about right to me. I think you can use that with any genre. It's not just limited to the Blues. Some people may not like Korn, but I don't think anyone can say that Jon Davis doesn't feel his songs 100%. As a result, his songs became very well received by his fans.

People always ask me "how do you write your songs?" And the only thing I can say is, I don't really know. Hahaha. It all just comes out sometimes.

That's still not to say that it's the only way to write. Maynard James Keenan once said that he likes to take on a subject, try to get to the center of it, and find out what makes it tic. Basically saying that he'll sometimes write songs as if he were living vicariously through the subject, not necessary being the one living it.

You might witness a woman crying, but all you can witness is that she feels some kind of pain, and is crying. But what's making her cry?? There could be any number of things causing her pain, and she could tell you why she's crying. You would even be able to write a song from her point of view. You would technically not be living what she is going through. But it is possible to live vicariously through her and interpret the center of her pain and have it be heart-felt.

well said dan duke, as shred said it doesn't only apply with blues. i write songs whenever i feel pain (mental), or feel empathy for someone else/the enviroment. just playing the notes, without any emotion put into it doesn't work. one time i ws playing in the school PAC at lunchtime with a couple of people watching me, andanother student came up to me and said, "how do you make a simple song sound good??". i said "dunno" but i really knew the answer; i was pourng my heart and soul into some of those songs.

You know, there really is something to that Rebelsoul. Sometimes when playing, if I start to think of someone or something that gets me upset, I find that I am actually playing better/more intensely than I do when I am concentrating on my playing. I am not sure if it is because I am not trying as hard to play, or if being a little upset actually helps.

Maybe this is similar to how actors use experiences from their past to help their acting. I feel that I can play the blues at my best while remembering some of the things that the ex did to me (the bad stuff, not the good). Some of the best blues players that I know, have had much heartache in their lives, and they are able to express that pain through their playing. Although I've had much heartache, I still can't play very well.

Like Buddy Guy sang, "Now the blues ain't what you're singin', the blues is what I feel". "Don't Tell Me About the Blues" from the "Slippin' In" CD.

Once you find the little nerve that runs from your heart-or soul to your hands you'll be able to play the blues.
