I went to the "big town" today and scoped out some of the pawn shops looking for deals and saw a Fender Strat hanging there with the tags.? I was told it was brough in by somebody who won it in a radio contest. It was an MIM with some kind of funky graphics and a bunch of signatures of famous country players that were at a local music festival. This was THE prize for contest so, my gripe is why enter if you don't want the prize?

I seen this before, radio station giving away a motorcycle; the DJ that announces the winner asks, "what's the first thing your going to do with it?" and the winner says "sell it!".
Of course I was one of those who wanted it and would have rode the wheels off of it, so maybe I'm one of few that this kind of thing bothers.

I just think it's sad that this guitar did not go to someone who would have appreciated it. I'm not into country, did not like the graphics and wasn't about to pay MSRP, so it's still hanging there.

hey i enter contests all the time that i have no interest on the prize, but the cash it will bring. its the winners choice. a pawnshop is a little extreme lol. i would have at least craigslisted it lol. easy come easy go.

Unfortunately thats what's wrong with too many people today if they can get something for nothing they will whether or not it's something they could make use of.I hate to see lovely things go to people who don't appreciate the use of some things.A guy in the next community bought his wife a brand new limited edition Vette and the car has yet to hit 50mph-not one word of exaggeration, she drives it like it was loaded with nitro-glycerin -what a waste of such a fine piece of engineering. There oughta be a law but unfortunately even the un-deserving apparently deserve to win sometimes.

slinger,

its really a win/win. the winner didnt want it, he/she would rather have the money.
so he sells it to the first guy/gal that has the cash. everybody wins right?
at least he didnt burn it to the ground.

I see the point that it can be a win/win. Maybe the money is something the winner needs or could put to better use and the buyer is someone who will appreciate the item.

I guess I just have a more romantic vision of what could have been. I count myself lucky that I have been able get the career that allows me to purchase the things I want. I do however, remember 15 yrs ago when I would have sold plasma to pay for the sales tax on a give-away guitar.

Of course, that might not have worked either because they turn you away if you show up 3 days in a row. :)

Cash has always been a top prize in any contest. Maybe the person needed to pay their rent, or feed the family. They could have won it with the intention of keeping it but then had to sell it. Or maybe they just didn't like Country. Maybe they sold it to buy a Gibson

You've got me curious now Phreddy, what kind of car did Kyle Busch wreck-was it a race car or one that was given the winner as a prize?Idiots that destroy things just to show off or -as the tool from Kings of Leon did with his classic Gibson-wreck it in a tantrum these folks really get my goat. All this wrecking gear business became a cliche after Jimi Hendrix took it to a point where no one could better it.

slinger- kyle won a race in tennessee, and he received a custom gibson les paul, valued around 30 grand.

he claimed he didn't know what it was worth, but i lost all respect for him after that.

search around- you'll find the story somewhere

ok ok ok , i can forgive what he done. seriously. its his and he won it.
the reason he gave was very unselfish. stupid to us but hey, not everybody feels like we do about guitars. its like books, there are folks that embrace books like we do guitars.

its this "oh well" attitude that i think really sucks.
hes got my vote for douchebag of the week award.

the urban dictionary defines douchebag as follows:

An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.

If I Thought The Guitar Was Ugly Or Didn't Sound Good I'd Sell It Too.

Actually, there's an excellent reason to sell something you win: tax liability.

Seriously, if you win something you actually are considered to have earned income.

If you win a guitar worth $2,000, it means you could easily end up owing close to $1k in taxes.

Which he regretted immensely and paid an undisclosed figure to have repaired, not quite the same as someone destroying something of which they are ignorant to the value or significance.
