I was going through my YouTube Favorites tonight and found this Johnny Hiland video I locked in quite a while back. I have long loved Albert Lee when it comes to speed pickin', but I don't think anyone can touch this guy.

He started out on Teles, but he's followed the money since. Can't blame him for that.

Great picker-he's getting close to Danny Gatton territory with pickin' that quick.

If you like rapid-fire "attack" guitar, check out Ritchie Blackmore's solo assault on "Child In Time" off of the Made In Japan album. I believe he's playing 128th-notes (that's about seven notes per second).

lol - I'm talking about music, not some freak going for a world record. His speed's all in his right wrist, nothing impressive (or even particularly musical) to me in his fretting. Boring.

As far as Albert, yeah, he's great and probably my all-time favorite chicken picker, but he ain't as fast as he used to be. That video is from 20 years ago. I think the fat boy is probably faster than Albert today, hence the title of my post.

And let's face it, this forum is nothing but opinions.

Wow that was pretty great...Why is it a guitar player can wear anything he wants and look cool? I love the part where he plays the laughing cords on his guitar...That was awesome for a newbie like me!

I have never understood the thing with playing fast and guitar playing. It's not a 100 meter dash, it's playing a guitar.

Playing fast is fine if it makes a point or emits a feeling. Players like Lee and Hyland can do that. It's not the end-all.

Amen! Watching guys like Albert Lee & Johnny Hiland play is amazing because their hands are obviously not tied to their brains - no one can think as fast as they play. And both hands are doing a lot of work. Some guys are just born to play! And then there's the rest of us...
