I know this might be opening up a whole new argument but......

I've noticed that Jerry Garcia hasn't been mentioned once around here as the greatest guitar player of all time. No, I don't agree with that in the least...not even close. But we've all met those deadheads who just won't let go of the idea that Jerry was a genius, not appreciated by mortal man. I'm just suprised we haven't seen that yet.

I don't think he'd make my top 100 really.

I have a bootleg of a prison concert he did.

It's awesome. It's the only Jerry Garcia I've actually listened to though, I keep meaning to check out his other stuff.

I'll say he's a very good guitarist and I like some of the dead's stuff, but he just doesn't come to mind when I think of the best guitarists.

He's in my top 5. I've listed him as one of my top guitarists in one of those threads. I've listed him and George Harrison as my "guitar heroes".

I don't think he was without faults - but the notes floated from his guitar - and it wasn't any thing I ingested that made me hear that - I love his tone and flow - be it on one of his custom electric guitars, a banjo, or a plain old acoustic.

He had a unique style - it doesn't move everyone - but, hey, that's life. I've seen the Dead hundreds of times, and the various solo bands of Dead members, many, many times - especially the various bands that Jerry worked with or formed.

I remember one time I mentioned him in one of those "greatest guitar player ever" threads on here but nobody else really had much to say about it. I have this cd that I got from my friend who was big into the dead its a cd of acoustic recordings by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman I forget what its called I think it was "shady grove" but I don't remember. Its got some really good songs on there. I saw Grisman play with Bela Fleck one time, that was an incredible show. Jerry was so creative and he did so much its too bad he's not around anymore. I wanted to go see him play with his band or with the Dead but I never got a chance to.

You know who else is not mentioned alot; although maybe not really a "best" guitarist, but certainly a "breaking the rules" one - Frank Zappa -the man was a genius -

Zappa in New York is a great piece of work. I've always wanted to cover $@!&# and Beer, but never had band with anyone willing. :?

As for Jerry, I learned to dance at The Greatful Dead, both on the floor and on the Fretboard. I never would have explores Country if it weren't for the Grateful Dead. Let's not leave out Bob Wier, "Rhythm Man Extrordinaire".

While we're on Jamm Music, let's remember Little Feat's Pual Barres, Fred Tacket, and Lowell George. (and the Oedipal crush I have on Shawn Murphy)

I was in a band once and we did $@!&# and beer and we also covered why does it hurt when I pee. I'd love to get a band to do some San Berdino and Florentine Pogen (one of my fave frank tunes to play).
