im convinced that if any country can survive a mess like this and come out bigger, better, and stronger than it ever was before, its gonna be japan.

They have been much much worse and they still keep coming back as a nation. The Japanese are some of the coolest people I have been able to really get to know.

though ive never visited japan, its a place i wish to visit.
some of the coolest and smartest folks ive had the pleasure to meet in my yrs have been from japan. im convinced they will make lemonade from these lemons in record time.
they will find the slightest shimmer of positive in all of this and build bigger and better from it. one drip of hope and thats all they as a people need to grow from.
they will set an example for all the world to see from this im willing to bet.

Japan has helped NZ with SAR when we needed it for Christchurch and now NZ is going to do the same for Japan. We no longer are in a 'rescue phase' so our prime minister has given the go ahead for our SAR to leave for Japan asap.

8.9 is insane. That type of force should level a whole city, if not damage infrastructure and buildings severely to say the very least. The recent quake in Christchurch has pretty much damaged every building and has brought the Govt to demolish 1/3 of the whole city, where the same amount of areas unbuildable on now due to liquifaction. and that was a 6.3- after a 7.1 in september. Japan's aftershocks are around the early 6 figures...

So you can imagine a 8.9 will bring a city to it's knees. They have the infastructure to deal with large quakes but nothing will ever prepare you for something that big. I mean, it will turn any pieceful urban neighbourhood into something that resembles a lawless warzone.

We are all thinking of the people of Japan- and for me, it is a remnder that it doesnt matter how bad things get, they can allways be worse.

And remember- Some people in Japan are right now praying for their lives, which is something we all take for granted.

Super Kid, thanks for the concern, but my family and I are fine. Okinawa is a good distance southwest of Toyko. We didn't even feel anything here and we usually get a little bit of a shake here when something of that size or even smaller hits in the mainland.

I do have many friends that have family and friends in mainland Japan that we are worried about, communication up there has been spotty do to the quake and tsunami. This is the biggest quake ever in Japan and 5th or 6th worldwide. Aftershocks were stronger than the quake that leveled Haiti. Most of the urban areas up there are very well constructed for these things but more of the rural areas aren't as prepared.

I'm glad to see your OK.I hope your family and friends are OK.Prayers For you all from Michigan.

My friend Miki is from Sendai. She came here to learn English about 6 months ago. She finally found out today that her father and sisters have survived, but they were evacuated and she cannot contact them. So far she knows she has lost several friends and many more are still missing. To see and feel her pain and anguish is undescribable.
I have offered her my condolences and donated to the Red Cross for the relief effort. I also join all of you in offering positive thoughts and energy to the people of Japan. They are a strong, proud community, and I know they will come back strong from this.

It's great to see people on here who genuinely care. I'm safe from disaster here in Canada and my biggest pet peeve are the people who either simply don't care about these disasters because it doesn't affect them or the ones who care for 3 days while it's the big story and it's stylish to do. Seeing some of the videos out there is amazing and humbling. I pray for all involved.

I have just posted Ishibashi a note on their facebook wall just giving them words of encouragement. I hope they are OK- an Ishibashi staff member is updating news on facebook.

Ishibashi- I have had one of my best retail service experiences from them. I think they are professionals and they will do whatever it takes to make their customers happy. They are very nice people too, just like the people of Japan.

Fukishima plant scare is really worrying me right now.. I don't like the idea of nuclear generated power myself- then again, NZ has a very strong stance on that. I only hope that it's not as bad as it seems to be, it's the last thing we want to happen in this world.

Our Govt has pledged urgent help for Japan, with a gesture of sending our top SAR squad as a return of a kind gesture they gave us when we had our earthquake weeks ago. Japan has gave their elite search and rescue help for us without us even asking for help, they were there for us as friends when we were in need. That's the type of people Japan are. Nice people to say the least.

What I dont understand is why things like this allways happen to the nicest people of the world?

I looked up the Loma Prieta (the quake we had in the Bay Area in '89) quake on google to get an idea of the strength of the quake in Japan. Loma Prieta was a 7.1 and that nearly brought the entire bay area to our knees, I can't begin to imagine the force of an 8.9 quake.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese right now; especially the ones who are still unable to locate their family members. I pray that they'll be able to find some peace and be able to come to terms with this horrible tragedy.

Thanks for posting that amazing vid Bro. I couldn't imagine skyscrapers under that much stress, scary for sure. I feel terrible about Japan, I have no idea what to do at this point other than say a prayer.

The earthquake in Japan has been upgraded to 9 on the richter scale. Over here we have regular quakes called Suðurlandsskjálfti (Southlandquakes), the last one was actually, in 2008, two quakes at the same time was 6,3 ricther and in June 2000 there was 6,5 and 6,9 on richter. I can't even begin to think about what 9 on richter feels like, I got a little nervous when we got couple of quakes at 4 richter jus couple of weeks ago.
