I would bring a spare pickguard and have them sign it and just store it away. A few screws and you can have your autographed guitar, or can safely stow it away so nothing wipes off.

NEVER get your axe signed. eventually it will rub off bro and then where will you be?
get a pickguard and have it signed. later you can find you a cheap MIM and hang it on the jam room wall with installed pickguard. depending on who signs it it can bring the value of the guitar considerably.

I just don't ask for autographs on anything.

What's the friggin' point?

Celebrity stalkers are about one "RCH" above a pedophile in my book.

Only if the person signing it is part Santa Claus/Jesus, and can make any of the twigs in the parking lot into an exact copy of the guitar...

I don't think I'd get a guitar signed. If I go to a concert and get some good pictures of the band, I might go to another show and try and get the photo signed. I have quite a few autographed pieces of music and sports memorabilia, but never a guitar.

I've had experience on this topic. I first got my guitar signed by my favorite band when I was about 13. Thankfully, it was on the pickguard. I thought it would be so cool when I put that pickguard on my guitar, but unfortunately I ended up never playing it because I was afraid of scratching off the signatures. It's called a pickguard for a reason. So I took the pickguard off and instead I now display several pickguards with the signatures of musicians I like on the wall instead of on a guitar. It's cool as art, but not on your #1.

I didn't think I'd ever let anyone near my guitar with a marker again until a couple of years ago when I got the chance to meet one of my all time favorites, Jimmie Vaughan. The more I thought about it, the more I thought it would be really cool if he signed my Fender Strat. So I brought it with me and he signed it for me on the back of the headstock (where it's out of the way and I don't have to worry about scratching it). Instead of a sharpie I brought along a paint pen, so it's signed in paint. That way it doesn't ever fade. So anyway, I still play the guitar constantly (it kills me to see an autographed guitar in a glass case or up on a wall where no one will ever play it). And to me, it made the guitar really special. So no regrets there.

More recently I got to meet Hubert Sumlin, and originally I was just going to ask him to sign a pickguard. But I ended up "opening" for him at a jam at Antone's and being that it was probably the most awesome gig in my life so far, I asked him to sign the back of the headstock of my Squier (the guitar I was playing). He did, and that guitar is really special to me as well. :D But honestly, unless it's Jimmie Vaughan or Hubert Sumlin or someone of that caliber, I'd never let anyone else mark on my guitars. For the rest, there are pickguards.

Bottom line is, if it's your guitar and you're never going to sell it, and you really, really like the artist who you want to sign it then go for it. Just try to get it somewhere out of the way.

I tried to get Kenny Wayne Shepherd to sign my strat but the meet and greet fell through. Like TGS I would have had him sign the back of the headstock.

There are lots of pro players that have guitars covered in signatures. Heck SRV had his signed by Mickey Mantel (I think that's who it was).

TSG, since you seem to be very lucky with meeting guitar greats and if I were you I'd have a guitar specifically for them all to sign.

I work with a guy who gets autographs and pictures with everyone he can,he goes to comic book conventions or whatever they're called, and "super hero" type things and has photos of himself with hundreds of people, actors, authors etc.,with his arm around them like they're best friends.
It's his thing, but it's not mine....in Nashville there's a thing called "Fan Fair" or something similar to that now, where the multitudes make their way to Music City to see their heroes and heartthrobs and get pictures and autographs....it's big business.
