I knew a young lady, my god what a beauty, her hair shining bright in the sun. Her skin was as soft as the petals of roses. Her eyes sparkled like stars in the heavens. Her teeth were as white as pearls in the moonlight. her voice was as clear as a cold mounten stream. Her face had the look of what every girl wanted. She looked like a beautiful dream. She spent all her days before a great mirror admiring all she could see. It was her own reflection that kept her, setting there patiently. She sat there for years, and years, and years, till her skin turned wrinkled, and her hair turned dingy and gray, her eyes lost there sparkle, and her voice turned shaky and old. The great mirror became dusty, and covered with cobwebs, and soon she could not see. The pretty young lady, my god what a beauty. I wonder where she could be.

the worried young man
and the mirror you'll see
is a tale as sad as a tale can be
he was smitten by a woman
very lovely was she
and so he painted her picture
on his mirror happily
the likeness was perfect
a more beautiful woman never seen
but there was just one thing
the young man was worried
about everything
most especially the woman
in the picture he painted
the woman in his dream
would he be good enough
could she love this man or
was he not the one that she could love
was his plea as the days went by
he would gaze at the mirror
worrying but never asking her point of view
days turned to years and still he looked
at the painted mirror image
the woman he once knew
passing time caused the paint to flake
the true mirror showing through in its wake
when the young man looked now
at the mirror with his beautiful picture
no longer there, now just an old man
not smiling, with a little gray hair
old eyes lost their sparkle
while waiting and wondering there
about his beautiful woman
that vanished write before his eyes

Vanity Fair?

"Ah! Vanitas Vanitatum! which of us is happy in this world? Which of us has his desire? or, having it, is satisfied? Come, children, let us shut up the box and the puppets, for our play is played out."

And the odd thing is, I could quote that word for word years before I ever read the novel - because it appears in an Ian Dury number, This Is What We Find from the Do It Yourself album. Which if you have any idea who Ian Dury was is quite surprising.

Cheers - C
