I think I'd like to keep a guitar in my car to practice on lunch breaks. How bad would this be for the guitar?

It would depend on the weather in your area. Extreme conditions can be bad for you as well as your equipment. You don't see guys taking guitars with them to climb Mt. Everest.

Are you talking about an acoustic :?: or a solidbody electric. :?:

Either way trunk or interior car temperatures get up to 130 degrees Farenheit. Highly damaging to guitars regardless of them being in the case or not.
At those temps, glue becomes soft, and often times the back and sides of an acoustic will separate. The bridge may also separate from the top. Necks will warp..

Scared Yet :?: :?: If I have my guitar in the car when going somewhere, I always make sure it is for the least amount of time possible.
Cars are the worst possible storage area's for musical instruments.

If you must have a practice guitar in the car, I would suggest getting one of those small travel guitars which dismantle to fit inside a small case, or perhaps Yamaha makes a great travel practice guitar, mostly from composites which are more resistant to extreme temperature changes.
Anything else, you will be horrified one day to open up the case and find instead of a nice instrument, a pile of kindling with loose metal wires flopping about.

Thanks for the replies. It's a solid body electric. I figured it wouldn't be great for it, maybe I'll get a cheap guitar to keep in there.

The rule with guitars and cars is: If you would be uncomfortable sitting in the car, so would your guitar. No chance of bringing it inside with you? :)

I'd suggest finding an out of the way place inside to leave the guitar if at all possible. I wouldn't recommend leaving a guitar in a closed up car.
