I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. I have never taken lessons from a formal teacher and have learned most of what I know jamming with friends or from the large collection of music books I have. Over the past 5 or so years I have been actively following the lessons available over the net and have purchased a couple of lesson packages as well. I learned almost all the chords and positions many years ago and am seeking to improve lead playing, timing/tempo and expression. I learn something new every time I pick up the guitar. I believe I would be a far better player had I taken lessons early on and will likely start lessons this fall.

see i have a diffrent experiance i think just jamming and playing has beneffited me more than the lessons did i struck out on my own like i said and i have grown in leaps and bounds to where i wanna be(guitar legend) i mean i playing 100% better every month i find that my own investigation and finding my own way has lead me to be a bit more creative as well

i play alot of slide guitar now and my teacher told me that it was a waste of time to even try to play slide i mean i think iam doing better wit out lessons
just my take on it i felt held back

One of my goals is to get good enough to go on gigs with my teacher. Maybe by next summer.

I was able to do this several years ago with one of my old teachers. It was such a wonderful experience.

I'm mostly self taught. I took classical lessons for a year from a Berklee grad after 7 years of playing, but that was 30 years ago and I don't remember much of it anymore. Haven't taken a lesson since. I wouldn't mind taking some jazz lessons in the future though.

I self taught myself for a couple years, but decided I should take lessons so that I would have some good exercises and new material to practice. I think it's a great idea to take lessons if the teacher is adequate. The guy I took lessons from was an amazing guitar player and really knew his theory. I think having a teacher is better than being self taught because you have someone to stop you from developing bad habits and something to drive you to get better every week. But I think you can still be an amazing guitarist through self teaching, you just might not get there as fast.

Probably a combination approach is the best. You want to develop your own style but you don't want to develop bad habits. For example, my teacher was able to spot some problems with my fingering that I hadn't noticed. Once I did it her way I improved a lot.

There is a lot of good stuff out on the web though, so it is easier than ever to learn by yourself.

One CD/book package I bought, after previewing several free lessons, was made by a company called Watch & Learn, Inc. Their rock guitar books are a good way to start. I was disappointed with the DVDs though, and would't buy those again.

I used to think that self taught was the way to go, until I took lessons... In one year of lessons and theory I learned more than what I had on five years on my own... A good guitar teacher will show you cool stuff, but will also give you the tools for you to embark on your own journey...

The good thing about knowing theory is that now I can be my own teacher... Figuring stuff out has never been easier... And modes don't sound like greek anymore!!!

Started self taught. Went to a teacher for assistance... then went back to self teaching again.
