i taught myself to play blues guitar, i met my friend who later turned my guitar tutor from whom i learnt classical rock, he taught me the basics of classical rock that helped me start playing a new genre, i had a few lessons from him, grateful to him, his name is Abdul Rani, without him helping me to start i won't be able to play classical with electric guitar.

Entirely self-taught, which is why I am entirley rubbish.

No natural talent, you see, just a love of guitars and - more so - all things Fender.

Totally self taught. At first it really sucked. YouTube videos of live performances helped me out at some points, just so I could see how the real deals played things. Once I got to a certain point, it turned into rapid progress, and then I felt like lessons would "corrupt" my style and my learning up to this point if I don't find the right instructor.

I know my soloing could benefit from some instruction but I'm still battling with these afformentioned thoughts.

Mainly self taught, I took a few lessons from George Benson in the early '80s. Both Ronnie Earl and Duke Robillard have shown me things. Buddy Guy was shown me stuff as well.

I still play along with CD and DVDs, and learn new riffs.

Oh man.
I took lessons for two years, and the other 6 I just learned on my own.
I'm a self taught blues guitarist, who knows his roots.

And to this day I like to learn peoples songs, so when people say "Play me something!" I have something to play that they know.

All 3 and 1/2 years I've been learning, I've had lessons. My teacher is awesome and without him to guide my playing, I would be nowhere close to where I am now.

I had all the bad habits from self-taught, but one teacher made me bend with the third finger (I was using the middle finger) and use the the third and little finger a lot more, and that changed everything so I could progress myself without lessons.

The other thing is get a guitar that's easy and comfortable to play, with comfortably low action. Too many students get cheap guitars which are brutal to play.

Today with all the video CD/TAB lessons available (and online lessons too) it's easy to learn at home for way less than $50 an hour.

i have been taking lessons for two years (since i first started playing) and will for as long as i can. Actually having a living person showing you how to play songs and stuff is to me way better than a magazine or computer screen.

I had a couple lessons years ago but self taught since then. I just wasn't willing to start at the bottom with Mel Bay lessons and a teacher trying to convince me to play right handed when my buddy was already blazing through Van Halen licks. Learning to read was more like work than fun so I acually gave up guitar for a few years. In retrospect I probably should have kept with learning to read music. I just play by ear now but in truth I probably spend more time mucking around with licks I know than really applying myself to make some real progress in my playing.

Last year I took a few lessons with a guitar teacher that a friend recommended. It turned out that they were both jerks, the friend and the teacher. I learned a few things but nothing of substance.

This year I was in Sam Ash buying the smallest thing possible, guitar picks, and struck up a conversation with the salesperson. She seemed really knowledgeable so I asked if she would give me lessons. She said yes and the rest is history.

She asks what I want to learn and where I am having problems. She is booked for an hour but always stays for longer. I've only been studying with her for a month but my playing has advanced more than it did in a year of just looking at video lessons.

I have a teacher and I've been taking lessons for about 3 years. I never got in to reading music so I never bothered. Me and My Teacher go out and have gigs once and awhile.

One of my goals is to get good enough to go on gigs with my teacher. Maybe by next summer.
