Did/Have you taken lessons or are you self taught?

I am basically self taught, although I have taken a few lessons to get myself out of a rut.

I've never took any lessons (unless studying the legends count, hehe). I believe being self taught lets your style and natural abilities come out alot quicker.

I'm not saying lessons are particularly bad. It's just hard as hell to find anybody worth their salt to teach somebody something without corrupting them at the same time.

I tried out a couple of teachers, one of them just wanted me to play duets at a coffee house with him and the other wanted me to start from scratch.
I just needed to get some fresh ideas and a little nudge.

I took lessons for 6 months. My teacher was a good guitar player but did not know theory. I need to understand why in the learning process. So I gave up lessons and have been teaching myself since then.

Just try to find a teacher that will teach theory. I looked for one and they all said I was crazy for wanting to learn it.

i just came back from my lesson and it was really useful and was probably one of the best i've had for a while... we worked with all types of scales off of pretty much every type of chord and we worked on ways to get from one type of scale to another... good stuff

Good teacher. All of the ones I found just wanted to teach songs of their choice and give finger exercises.

ya, my teacher usually asks me what i looked at during the week and if theres anything in particular i want to go over, so we generally go over scale patterns and such or whatever i feel the need to broaden my knowledge on during the lesson

ya, it can be really helpful because i don't know of to many sites that could show all those patterns and root notes like seeing it in person.... i think he has over 15 years of schooling and experience for a good price, so i find it really helpful even though its only 30 minutes a week

30 minutes a week or every other week would work for me.

I took lessons off and on for a few years in elementary school and in high school. I just study on my own now though.
