Here's a pretty comprehensive 4-part video series covering the development of this ubiquitous stompbox......

Enjoy (and apologies if this has been previously posted)

I was sent the link to that from Dunlop today and only watched Pt.1so far,it's very interesting and informative. It clears up a lot of misconceptions that I had about its development.

Thanks Arjay!

Just got one of these (basic model) and with all the versions out there from $ to $$$, I'm curious to see how it's progressed.

Best part for me was hearing Eddie Kramer explain that Voodoo Chile was done thru a Fender Dual Showman Amp and not a Marshall :!:

The things you learn after 40 years...

Yeah, but Hendrix has always been overhyped :!: He plays one decent wah wah song and he is THE guy with it, he plays a couple Marshalls and he is the THE Marshall guy, he plays with his teeth and he is THE showman...His wah wah playing was adequate, he used Fenders much longer than he used Marshalls...and he got the playing with his teeth and the behind his back and other wild stuff from Buddy Guy...And Clapton introduced him to both the Wah Wah AND the Marshall Amp! If he hadn't died early due to his own stupid vices, he would have put out a couple of flop albums and showed just how human he was...Now I think he wrote some great songs, but his playing was sloppy, out of tune half the time...they need to stop mining his overated genious

Thanks to this forum, my yesterday evening English Listening Lesson was better than all the rest together :D

I enjoyed it a lot, and learned some new things. Nice. Do someone know if the full documentary will be in DVD? I'd like to buy it. Well, if they just upload it to the web, and give us for free...

Now I'm GASing for a Cry Baby...

I had a Crybaby 535q with the wah variations knob (position #1 was classic crybaby) and the booster, for about 3 years.
I hated the damn thing. It was too expensive for what it was doing. The only decent sounds I managed to get out of it was only on the clean amp channel and with positions 2,3 (3 they said was the same as Hendrix's Crybaby). The classic Crybaby position #1 was awful, with tearing tremble... Yikes.
The worst thing about it was the sonic curvature. During rocking it, you could hear more of the 'W' and 'H' sounds of the 'WAH' and the 'A' sound was a little, tiny portion, almost like wwWWWWaHHHHhhh, if you know what I mean. Not symmetrical sound at all.
And it really sucked with overdrive...Even sucked more with distortion.
I can't see what's all the fuss about it. I guess it's another marketing thing.

Well, I got rid of it and went blindly (well had done some querying on Harmony Central pages) for a Rocktron Tri-Wah.
For almost the same price of a classic crybaby and half the price of the 535q I got a pretty decent, or dare say quite good Wah, definitely miles away better than the Crybaby which has a 3 sound knob and the sonic curvature is pretty symmetrical.
I'm more than happy with this buy.

I had a similar experience in buying a used "Cry Baby" which sounded terrible. I took it back to the store and got my money back.

Recently, due to a sales promotion on MF, I got a brand new one for free! This one sounds to me, like the wah pedals of the 70's. Nice wide response and sound vs the other one that seemed to be all treble. Same model but different sound.

Re Jimi's Wah playing :the way he used to wah in Machine Gun and Star Spangled Banner were much more masterful than Voodoo Child(slight return)especially in Machine Gun the way he mimics Billy and Buddy's voices in the background before the "battle scene" takes amazing coordination to move the pot in such minute intervals as to mimic each note. Randy Hanson may be the only other person who could accomplish that with any success. Plus Jimi's use of the wah, feedback, harmonics and whammy to emulate the scream of a fighter jet and bombs dropping was technically brilliant also and no one up until that point had tried such a feat.

Re Jimi's Wah playing:Jimi used the wah on many songs-sure Voodoo Child may be the best known but it's not his most masterful use.Machine Gun and Star Spangled Banner have that distinction. With the carefull balancing of the wah and feedback he can "sing" along with Buddy and Billy's harmonies in Machine Gun and with, feedback, harmonics, wah and whammy use can emulate the screams of jet fighters and bombs dropping.

Listen to his percusive use of the wah in Little Miss Lover and Up from The Skies on Axis Bold as Love and the use of the wah with a harpsichord no less on Burning of the Midnight Lamp.

Jimi was no one hit wonder on the wah and he fine tuned it and explored all the possible boundries of its use to the point that he had his electronics wiz Roger Mayer modify them to create even more unearthly effects.

I stand by my post. Technique is wonderful but alot of time it is just wanking away for wanking aways sake and let's face it sometimes Jimi did a lot of that, especially with all the showing off he did.

But I am not trying to get anyones dander up, it is just my opinion. TIFWIW :!:

On the bright side, he did play a strat :!:
