wiki: constituting or bringing about a major or fundamental change
if that is criteria, then:
Les Paul
Chuck Berry
Roy Clark

that gets you to 1962 maybe then there would be three more and so and so...

Hendrix for sure. Everything about pop music changed after he came about.
Les Paul, yep, definitely. He's the reason you can overdub.
Marvin or Berry? Marvin in the UK? Maybe. Berry influenced Marvin and all them early 60's players. Then theres the worldwide appeal too. So I have to pick Berry.

1. Jimi Hendrix - Jimi completely flipped the music world on it's head.

2. EVH - I think every guitarist since the 80's has gone through an 'I wish I could play like Eddie' phase.

3. Dimebag Darrell - Any limits that previous players had put on the guitar, Dime smashed right through them.

Well .... I think the key word is revolutionary so that automatically leaves out a lot of popular favorites. There are a lot of players, some of whom have been mentioned who were/are great players, fantastic even but being good doesn't mean revolutionary. Revolutionary means turning the guitar wolrd upside down with something completely new and previously unexplored. I think Jimi prolly qualifies, maybe Stanley Jordan and you could even argue Eddie too as he raised the bar for right hand technique. You could also argue in favor of Muddy waters. He pretty much invented the modern 4 or 5 piece electric guitar band. In fact I'd say Muddy is the quitessential revolutionary guitarist. Prior to him the guitar was mostly seen as a rythm section instrument. Not a lead or soloist instrument.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

In my opinion, every few years from the 50's to the 90's there were some revolutionary musicians. From the craddle of Rock & Roll music to the variety of current different styles (punk, hard, metal, grunge, etc) there's a great crossroad and somebody had to be the first to choose a different way.

Can say Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Eddie Van Halen... a lot of them.

And in Spain, Camaron de la Isla (a flamenco singer –cantaor, as we say–) was the first one mixing flamenco and rock/pop music, with the help of Tomatito (literaly, Little Tomato :) ), the guitar player in the band. You can listen it: "Leyenda del tiempo".

Paco de Lucia is another great guitarrist, who plays flamenco, classical, jazz (do you remember the album: Paco de Lucia, John McLaughin and Al Di Meola: Passion, Grace and Fire?)

So, you can be the next revolutionary guitarist, if you take the right different road...

PS: Hope you could understand my crappy english... (private help wellcome)

Wow, this is hard.
There are revolutionary and Evolutionary players, and sometimes it hard to separate the two.

Here goes...

Robert Johnson.
Les Paul.
Edward Van Halen.

Also....
Roy Clark.
Buck Owens.
Buddy Holly.

I know that some will say that there are better players then these, but all of them either started and founded the playing style that was new and different, they also changed the way music was recorded.
Les Paul was the first to have a home studio, and has pattens on many electronic gizmos we all use today. That, and he made a guitar with his name on it.
Roy and Buck were the first to fight for and keep the rights to there own songs, Buddy was the first to show that the artist could also be the Producer of his own music.
Edward not only founded the 80's hair metal, he has been in the design of guitars and amps for many years, even today.
And as to Robert, would we even have Rock and Roll/ Modern blues if not for his playing and vision?
