I heard someone talking about Jimmy Page having over 1000 guitars. I beleive it is probably true, since he has the cash and the space to store them all. My question is who has the largest guitar collection you have heard of or who you know personally. Are you jealous?

At some point, the law of diminishing return (on the enjoyment of acquiring/playing an instrument) kicks in. It's kinda like the difference between enjoying a few beers and going into full-fledged alcoholism.

I used to own twelve guitars (electric & acoustic), numerous effects pedals and five amps. Sometimes it was a whip figuring out which ones to take and which ones to leave when going to play. I also had to keep up with all of them, maintenance-wise.

Then there were two Great Mortage Payment Guitar & Amplifier Collection Massacres in 1996 and 1999. The collection was whittled down to two electrics (a G&L F-100 and my Stratocaster), one acoustic (Fender F250, my first guitar), two amps ('63 Re-issue Vibroverb and a Gibson G20), and three effects (TS9, Phase 90 and Crybaby)...and I enjoyed/appreciated all the instruments much more than I did previously.

The only thing I really want back from the old collection is a G&L Nighthawk (hated to sell it but the wife refused to live in the guitar case for some reason, so I sold it and made the mortgage payment)...I miss my old Bassman Ten until I think about carrying that heavy bugger around.

The collection has grown again (added a bunch of pedals and a Telecaster along the way as well as a couple of acoustics and an Ampeg Bass that were given to me by friends). I would like to get a 15 or 20 watt tube amp sometime soon, and there are a few guitars I would like to add to the collection (the previously mentioned G&L Nighthawk, a Dean Chrome G and maybe a Epiphone Wildkat), but overall, I'm happy with what I have, and I'm not jonesing to get back to where I was.

So, would I like to go through his collection and pick out a few axes to take home with me? Sure!

But no, I'm not jealous...when it gets too large, it kinda takes all the fun out of this addiction we all have.

After reading your post again, you asked who that we know owns the most guitars.

I have an acquaintance (I can't call him a friend because there's some aspects to his personality that I dislike immensely--racism, sexism, etc.) that owns approximately 20 Music Man Sabre II guitars (bastard predecessor to the G&L F-100), and at least 32 Fender '57 US Re-issue Stratocasters, besides multiple G&L F-100, G&L SC-3 and G&L Cavalier guitars as well. For a while he was collecting Peavey T60 guitars, too...and that's just the guitars I know about, because I rarely speak to him anymore. He rarely if ever sells anything he buys, so I have to assume he still has most of them.

He also collects LOUD, high-wattage clean-sounding amps like the old Music Man combos and Fender Concert amps. He has more amps than I can count. He gets upset if anyone plays louder than him, but in reality, he's not much more than a decent rhythm chordist, and a strummer at that (he has to play all six strings whenever he plays anything).

I've always heard that there is a guy in Japan that has a warehouse full of guitars. Urban legend? I'm not sure but I wouldn't put it passed someone whose got a ton of cash and loves American and other guitars. I wouldn't mind a warehouse full of axes.

Ace Frehley of Kiss at one time had two semi trucks
that followed them on tour that was loaded with his guitars only.
that isnt including what he left in his studio at home.
gibson claims that there were times when they needed to do research on a guitar from the past that they would call ace to get a copy of one. at last i heard he dwindled down his collection a great deal. he has at least 3 to choose from for each day of the yr.
thats still a lot of guitars.
Ted Nugent has an amazing collection too.

My contribution, all original CAR Fenders from the 63-73 period (except the 64 factory refinned Esquire)

Not the largest by any means but still very enjoyable.

I read in Premier Guitar magazine, that Ritchie Sambora buys on the average of
12 guitars a week. IIRC, he's been doing this for decades too. You do the math!

There was a guy from Ontario,Canada-Mississauga I believe-who was selling a collection about a year and a half ago for $13,000,000.00.It looked like it probably represented every model and year of electric guitar made by Fender and Gibson. He had all the guitars lined up in a huge warehouse and was selling as a whole only. There appeared to be several hundred but I've heard that there are some non-playing Japanese hoarders who have thousands of valuable vintage guitars sealed in hermatically controlled vaults doing nothing but building up equity.

That's the kind of stories I've heard about the guys in Japan. The nerve. I guess it's a free country--or is it? Anyway thousands of Fenders? Man that would be awesome just to see. I mean even at GC they only have a couple hundred hanging up ( complete with fingerprints and scratches) but can anyone imagine a thousand guitars? That's hideous.

Whilst on a business trip to LA a few years back, a mate & myself had arranged an appointment to see a guy living a bit further north up the coast (won't say where or name anybody) with the objective to try & sell him some specialist professional filming kit we were selling (he'd seen us at a trade show in Las Vegas)

Having found the place (a mansion type house) & been invited in, we were shown into a large room with a PA & full band set up, & some very desireable 50's/60's Fender guitars sitting on stands. As we had both played in a number of bands over the years (starting around 1964) in the UK the conversation immediately went to the guitars etc & we chatted about guitars & music for some time over a drink.

Our host then simply asked us to take our shoes off, & beckoned us to follow him up a large staircase & into an enormous room on the first floor. The walls of this room were covered in old guitars of all makes & models, hung at 90 degrees to the walls, so the density was literally around two guitars to a foot of wall!

We spent a good hour wandering (drooling) around the room with the guy telling us about where the various guitars had come from. I don't know how many were there, but it was certainly hundreds.

Finally we got around to the sales patter, but did he buy anything ....... nope!
