1. Hendrix
2. SRV
3. Any idiot who smashes his guitar.

1 and 2, not because they are not talented but they are just overrated.

3. Because anyone who would smash their instrument does not deserve to have one.

B B King is more than the sum of his parts. He is a "bluesman", not just a guitarist..
Same goes for Chuck Berry, not just a guitarist.

SRV .. hot and cold
Jimmy Vaughn .. a better rhythm player than SRV was a lead player IMNSHO

Eric Clapton, as guitarist excellent, but as a musician who plays a guitar; Eric Johnson.
Clapton is another sum of his parts guy..

Burt Kocain.. never could understand adulation of mediocrity.

Hendrix... next... couldn't keep my attention for more than a minute.

Over rated guitarist.. Esteban

I dont really believe in overrated or underrated guitarist. Just like I dont believe there are "better" guitarist. There are levels for sure. My teacher is going to know more then I do but every once in a while I do something and he goes "whoa wait show me how to do that." We can all learn from each other, and until one guy knows and perfects it all, no one is better. No one is over or underrated. Just guitar.

+ 1

I couldnt have said it better

Yep, I'll 2nd that, it's all about music that moves you. Silly to try and objectively compare something that's totally subjective.

His songs are like a movie that is just a series of stunts, but no plot, no acting and no dialogue. Yes, the stunts are amazing. But the movie doesn't "move me".

Malmsteen can (technically) play circles around almost anyone, but he hasn't really "said anything" in the song. Neat stunts, but he has no plot.

There are instrumentalists (a multitude of jazz artists like Joe Pass, George Benson as well as blues guys who do a lot of instrumentals like Freddie King) and even shredders (like Satriani) out there who can put a plot into their stuntshow (or a stuntshow into their plot), and they keep my attention.

Regarding BB King. If you read his biography "Blues All Around Me " he will tell you that he is not a great player. He is no speedster. But then "speed" is overrated.

What BB lacks in speed he delivers in phrasing. A big part of BB his vocals and stage presence.

He's good and all, but I have a fairly low opinion of him.

Santana would not be as famed as he is were it not for Gabor Szabo.

Finally after many years he admitted he was "influenced" by Szabo. Some think he outright "borrowed" Szabos style and used much of his music changing the tempo and
application ie from jazz to rock.

SRV is definitely overated but try playing a few of his songs the way he did, on 13-54 strings.
