Three guitar players that I think don't get the recognition they deserve are:
Mick Taylor--the Rolling Stones were at their zenith with him on lead, IMO their best recordings were Exile and Sticky Fingers and he collaborated on several of the songs on these albums. I don't think the combination of Ron Wood and Richards ever captured the magic of Taylor and Richards (although I guess they couldn't get along--hence Taylor's departure).

Lindsey Buckingham--one of those with an instantly indentifiable style. Just a fantastic guitar player.

Number one most under-rated--David Hidalgo of Los Lobos. This is one of the all-time great bands from one end of the stage to the other (pay attention to Conrad Lozano's bass sometime) and Hidalgo is a master on acoustic, electric, 12-string (and that's not all)... and a helluva singer too.

Steuart Smith (does current touring and recording with Eagles amoung others).
Leo Nocentelli (The Meters and other various New Orleans funk bands).
Jimmy Nolen (The guy that made the "James Brown sound" funky with his comping).

Peter Green is a great player, but it's understandable that he's not well known. He spent years in a drug addled psychosis. He made a very good come back album that got a decent amount of album rock station play and then kind of disappeared again.

Joe Walsh? During the 70s from the James Gang, to his solo career, to the Eagles he was anything but unknown. I remember people talking about his guitar work all the time.

I don't know who Lukather is, so it's sure true that he's under-rated in my eyes. No restrictions on this thread, but I'd appreciate this. If the player or players you post is/are pretty obscure--how about a little about them.
