Hey everyone, just curious as to what boost pedals you guys like. I'm not looking for an overdrive, just a pedal that will give me a clean front end boost, pretty much just to pull solos out to the front of the mix.

Hmmm...hadn't thought of that. I was looking at the Xotic RC booster and it looks like it'll accomplish what I need, but I have no experience with their products.

Carl Martin is making some great sounding products.
His "Boost Kick" is about the same $ or a bit less than
the XRC one and it has 12dB of boost to give that extra
"kick" if required.

Yeah thought about that too, but, I already adjust the volume on the guitar pretty constantly and I'd prefer just to have something that clicks on and off when needed so I don't have to bother with finding a sweet spot between gain on the amp, guitar volume, and pedal level.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think the Xotic RC is gonna be my best bet. it'll give me a nice boost woth no added overdrive. Although, if I was going to add more overdrive, that fulltone OCD sound very nice.

I have found that my old Marshall Guv'nor is clearly the best boost/overdrive pedal I've used.It can give you a dramatic gain in volume without any distortion or you can adjust the gain and volume to make it sound as if you plugged into a Plexi 1959 stack.
The newer Guv'nors have heavy plastic cases as opposed to the metal of the old ones but their performance is still great although not quite up to the standards of the older ones.Check on ebay as sometimes people do part with the old Guv'nors,I bought mine from a local ad mag for $60 and haven't had a minute's trouble with it.

Tim, the Seymour Duncan Pickup Boost is really transparent.

I built a BYOC Confidence Boost that's actually nice and surprisingly quiet as well as transparent. It's a really simple build and was 15 bucks. Also the EH LPB 1 will kick you over the top. I used two of them when I was a kid. One drove the other into distortion. Cool Stuff. One will give you all the boost you'll need.

MXR Micro-Amp
-or-
Whirlwind "The Bomb"

I have a Micro-Amp and besides volume boost it just kinda gives you "more of me" into the front end of your amp.

"The Bomb" is made by the same guy who started MXR (he's also making versions of the Phase 90, the Dyna-Comp and the old Distortion+); I haven't played through one, but GP this month has an article about it and it sounds like the same pedal, just in a prettier package.

What's wrong with dialing back on your guitars volume knob, then rolling it up for a solo?

8) :P

I already do that. It's just a simple matter of convenience to have a boost pedal. That way when I'm on stage with my one channel amp I have essentially 3 guitar settings (level-wise). I can roll back to about 3/4 for softer sections, full on for more dynamic heavier sections, and then hit the pedal for my solos.

As far as the pedals go. It's a toss up between the Xotic and the SD Pickup Booster (thanks for the suggestion of that one Supro). We'll see what the situation calls for once I'm back out there playing shows.
