I have a few question regarding nut widths:
Through the years, what was the smallest nut width that Fender made for Strats and Teles?
What is the smallest nut width that they make today?

I played a friends mid-60's strat and the nut width felt much smaller than any of my late model Fenders. I really liked the way this smaller nut width played.

I have seen 1 9/16ths

I believe the smallest currently is a nominal 1 5/8ths.

I prefer adult width nuts... 1 11/16th minimum with 1 3/4 preferred.

At a time in history Fender would offer 1 3/4 at no upcharge.
